Who is Holger Rune’s coach?

Holger Vitus Nöskov Rune is a Danish male Tennis player, born on 29th of April 2003 in Gentofte Denmark. He has a sister named Alma. He began playing tennis at the age of 6. He gained inspiration from his sister who also played tennis at that time.  He’s ranked number 40 in the current ATP ranking, which he achieved on 16th of  May 2022. Holger career to some extent has been a success, starting from his junior career. He received a wildcard and won a match at 2019, Blois ATP challenger in June, at this he was 16 years old. Holger also competed in the 2019 Amersfoort Challenger in July where he won his second ATP challenger match win.

However, Holger’s career hit another success, when he was ranked No.1in ITF juniors, after he defeated Harold Mayot to win the ITF junior finals. Holger, graduated from junior level to pro-level in 2020 at the age of 16. In March 2021, Rune made his ATP debut, but unfortunately for him lost his first match to fifth-seeded Albert Ramos in three sets. Holger did not let that weigh him down, the following week of his defeat he was accepted into a qualifying draw as a wildcard at the Chile Open. He was successful this time, he won the qualifying round, and recorded his first ATP match win against the Argentine Sebastian Baez in straight sets. He followed the victory up, by defeating Benoit Paire to reach his first ATP quarterfinals. But his journey at the Chile Open ended at the quarter-finals, where he was defeated by the Argentine Fedrico Delbonis in straight sets. In this competition, he became the youngest quarterfinalist since 2014.

Furthermore, Holger’s career had a twist in June 2021. He won his first ATP challenger title in Bielle defeating Marco Trungelliti 6-3,5-7,7-6. His winning was followed up by a fine, after ATP investigated and found him guilty of homophobic slurs he made during his semifinal match in the tournament.  Holger received series of wildcards the following month into a clay-court event. Series of wins in this tournament boosted his ranking to Number 145. In august, he won the San Marino open and Verona Challenger, which made him the second youngest male player in the top 150. Rune entered the US open through qualifier play off, only to be paired with world number 1 Novak Djokovic, where he lost.

Rune made his French Open debut in May 2022, where he has been successful, he defeated 15th seeded Denis Shapovalov in the first round, also defeating 97th seeded Henri Laaksonen, in the second round, before defeating Gaston in the third round. He further defeated fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, and reach his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Above all, having talked more about Holger Rune himself, more credit needs to go to his Coach, and even talk more about him. His present coach is Lars Christensen who is also from Denmark, although no record shows his exact date of birth, but he said to be around 50s or 60”s. he presently resides in his hometown Denmark in Copenhagen.  He started working with Holger when he has been 7 years. Christensen has described Holger to be very fast and very dedicated to becoming a good tennis player. He said this in his interview in December 2021.  Since 2003, Christensen has worked majorly as a professional tennis instructor. In 2018, he was named Tennis coach of the year as a result of his work on Holger’s achievement. Christensen has also coached a female Danish tennis player Clara Tauson for seven years, during this period she won the Australian Open and became the junior World No. 1 under Christensen.

Additionally, Christensen talked about how he met Holger in an interview, he said “I was the head coach in a club in Denmark. I was in charge of everything, coaching all the kids. He came when he was seven, because his sister was playing tennis. In the winter, season, I started coaching all the small kids as well. I noticed him very fast. He progressed so fast and was totally dedicated to becoming a good tennis player, so that’s how I got my eyes on him.

In addition, Holger has achieved a lot under his coach Christensen. Holger won the European Championships indoor and outdoor in under 12 boys’ teams, the European championships under 14, the French Open, and the Junior Masters in 2019. He went on to become the junior World 1. Recently, The 19 year-old moved 350 places in the world ranking to number 40 with his performances under Christensen. 

Apparently, Christensen has had major impact on Holger’s career, he earned what could be regarded as his biggest win in his career when he beat world number 3 and 2 time champion Zverev en route to 1st ATP Tour SF, final and title at 2022 Munich, becoming 1st Danish champion since Carlsen at 2005 Memphis. Holger, also became the first ATP Tour quarter-finalist born in 2003, and youngest quarter-finalist since Coric, 17, at 2014 Umag. Christensen is known majorly for concentrating on long-term player development, technical advancement, and potential maximization. All this qualities, has been proven on Clara and Holger.

More so, having talked about Holger’s career including his coach, justice won’t be done, if his trainers are left behind. Holger has regarded his mother Aneke Rune who is also a tennis coach in his crew has his psychologist trainer. In an interview, he claimed she prepare her for matches. “My mother has supported me ever since I started playing. She helps a lot with psychology, including on the court. Without her, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, She makes me work my best”.

Lastly, judging by Christensen’s coaching ability it’s safe to say Holger is in the right hands to progress well in his tennis career.  Holger’s improvement in recent times, achievements, his desires and hunger for success, It’s very easy to say Holger will be successful as a tennis player, he’s definitely one to look out for on the court. ­­
