Who Is Alexander Zverev’s Coach?

Alexander Zverev was junior world number 1. After winning the junior Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2014, he was looked at as a commodity that would reach far in tennis. He started making waves at the pro level in 2017, in which he won a couple of Masters 1000 tournaments in the Canadian Open and the Italian Open. He continued his good form in 2018, in which he won the ATP 1000 masters, Madrid Open, and ended the season with the ATP World Tour Finals title. He suffered a few injuries in 2019, and that year can be termed as the below-par year of his career. He bounced back in 2020 when he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He donated all his Australian Open prize money for the bushfires that happened in Australia in 2020. After winning a couple of ATP 250 titles, he also reached the finals of the US Open, where he gave a tough fight to eventual champion Dominic Thiem but lost the match in the 5th set. He owned 2021, with as many as six ATP titles, reaching the semi-finals of the French Open, and then came the biggest moment of his career, where he won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

He is currently coached by his father, Alexander Zverev Sr., who has been coaching him since he turned pro. Many coaches have come and gone, but his father has been a permanent member of his coaching team. Without the presence of any elite coaches, he won the 2021 ATP World Tour Finals 2021. His father has played a huge role in his success story as many coaches have come and gone, but he has continued to provide his services to his son. Alexander Zverev senior was a former tennis player who represented the Soviet Union. He played mostly on the challenger circuits and has also defeated many top 50 ranked players. He has just coached both his sons, Alexander and Mischa Zverev

His mother, Irina Zverev, coached Zverev during his junior days, with whom he won the junior Australian Open Junior Title. She herself was a tennis player and represented the Soviet Union. After turning pro, his father took this mettle into his hands and started coaching him.

In 2017, he hired the services of Juan Carlos Ferrero, with whom he won two ATP 1000 masters. However, after an early exit from the Australian Open 2018, Zverev fired him from his coaching team. The reasons that came out also include that Ferrero heavily criticized the rest of his coaching staff, including his father. Juan Carlos Ferrero is a former Spanish Tennis player who was also world number one for a brief period in 2003. He played the finals of the US Open in 2003 in which he was defeated by Andy Roddick.

In the July of 2018, Ivan Lendl was hired by Alexander Zverev, and he won the ATP world tour finals when Ivan was on his side. With a poor show in 2019, Lendl was shown exit doors in 2019. Zverev, in a press conference, stated that Ivan Lendl was not all serious with his job as he was more busy playing Golf or with his dog than helping him on the courts.

Ivan was a legendary tennis player who has won 8 Grand Slam titles. Previously he coached Andy Murray and helped him become number one and win a few Grand Slams and stop the dominance of the top 3 that includes the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal.

A few months later, it was former world number 3, Spaniard David Ferrer, who joined his coaching team. David Ferrer brought more aggression to his game, and that was also reflected in the results. He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, and also, his first-ever Grand Slam appearance came during that time, when he reached the finals of the US Open. The duo was doing everything right until then, but in 2021, Ferrer left his coaching team as he didn’t wish to travel due to Covid restrictions. So, the association ended in January 2021.

David Ferrer himself was a legendary Spanish tennis player who was a regular feature at the Grand Slams. He has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the US Open. He was also the finalist of the French Open 2013 where he was defeated by the defending champion, Rafael Nadal.
