Real Madrid has responded to a former police commissioner’s allegation of referee bribery, saying that “no one dares” to arrest Florentino Perez.

According to The Athletic, Jose Manuel Villarejo recently claimed in an explosive interview with Spanish outlet RAC 1 that Real Madrid president Jose Mourinho paid off match officials.

The ex-police commissioner made the comments while discussing the ongoing crisis at Barcelona, which has seen the club accused of suspected payments to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spanish football’s referees committee.

Negreira faces corruption charges alongside Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, both of whom served as president of Barcelona during the final eight years of the referees chief’s term between 2010 and 2018.

“All presidents have done it. Florentino Perez too. Somehow, at Real Madrid, before this (Negreira case) the same thing had already been detected.

“It is impossible to prosecute anything that involves Perez. It would be suicide for anyone who dares to do so. Florentino is untouchable.”

Real Madrid responded to the charges with an official statement, noting that Perez has already launched legal actions against Villarejo for his “false accusations.”

The complete statement reads: “The president of Real Madrid C.F., Florentino Perez, has ordered the immediate filing of the corresponding legal action against the ex-commissioner Villarejo for the false accusations made on the Catalan radio station RAC1.”

Villarejo was arrested in 2017 on bribery and extortion accusations and stood trial four years later.

Real Madrid is ready for a Champions League group stage match against Napoli on Tuesday night at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
