The Philadelphia Eagles would like to keep Vinny Curry. That’s a daunting task with their salary cap woes. The Eagles are currently $10 million over the NFL salary cap. Curry is due to make $9 million this year. By trading or cutting the six-year veteran, Philly could save $5 million in cap room. Cutting that overage in half with one player would be a giant step in solving their salary cap problems. The defensive end is considered one of the most expendable players in the team. Removing him from the roster is the most sensible solution for the Eagles to get under the salary cap. Curry has played all six NFL seasons in Philadelphia.

However, Philadelphia wants to keep Vinny Curry. He did start all 16 games last season and recorded 3 sacks. He has 22 sacks in his NFL career. The former Marshall Thundering Herd star also was pivotal in a defense that ranked first in rushing defense. The Eagles allowed only 1,267 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns last season. Giving up just 3.8 ypc and 79.2 yards per game helped lead the Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory in team history. Keeping the defensive line intact would be a huge plus heading into the 2018 NFL season.
If the Eagles decide to deal Curry, they at least have a contingency plan in Derek Barnett. The rookie from Tennessee played in 15 games last year and finished the season with five sacks. The Eagles also have a strong defensive front with Brandon Graham, Fletcher Cox, and Timmy Jernigan returning. If they would happen to deal Curry, that makes the task of installing Barnett as the full-time starter much easier. The issue though is depth. Having a deep unit on the line is why the Eagles were so dominant against the run. Those guys take a beating and wear down quicker than any position. Keeping them fresh and swapping guys without weakening the line is what keeps teams from breaking down late in games. So obviously, keeping Curry would also have a few benefits.
