BRAVE Hayley Carruthers collapsed and crawled over the finishing line before being carried off at the London Marathon.

The determined Brit looked in agony as she made her way down the final stretch of the gruelling 26-mile race.

Just inches from crossing the finishing post, her legs gave way from underneath and she was forced to crawl to the finish on her hands and knees.

Worried staff rushed to her aid as exhaustion took over.

Carruthers, who crossed the line in a hugely impressive personal best of 2:33:59, attempted to get back to her feet but didn't have the strength to stand back up.

She was then carried off by medical staff to receive further treatment but later reassured fans she was fine on Twitter.

Alongside a picture of bandaged knees, she wrote: "Today I learnt how NOT to run a marathon! At least I PB'd."

BBC commentator Steve Cram reassured viewers that she will be okay.

He said: "Oh they need to get her help there. She’ll be okay.

“Well done Hayley. Hayley has just run a personal best. She’s okay. She knows she has to get across the line.”

Those watching took to Twitter to praise the 26-year-old's determination.

One said: "Really felt for Haylet Carruthers at the finish line at the London Marathon. Clearly gave it everything she had and still got over the finish line.

"All runners have my utmost respect, it's a huge feat to run that far."

Another added: "Watching Hayley crawl over the line in the London Marathon was a testament to how hard she has worked! Well done Hayley."

A third said: "So watching Hayley cross the line has just reduced me to tears. Running a marathon is bloody hard work, but she gave everything she had."
