UCLA men’s Soccer coach Jorge Salcedo resigned after being placed on administrative leave for his alleged involvement in accepting money as part of a college admissions scandal, a school official confirmed Thursday to the  Los Angeles Times .

Salcedo, who coached the Bruins for 15 years, was indicted last week for allegedly taking payments totaling $200,000. He has been accused of taking two separate payments of $100,000 to help one male and one female applicant get through admissions by pretending they were soccer recruits, though neither applicant played soccer, the Times reported.

Salcedo received the money through a scheme centered around a California-based non-profit called the Key Worldwide Foundation (KWF) founded by William Singer. USC, Stanford, Georgetown and Wake Forest have also been connected to the bribery case as well as actresses Felcity Huffman and Lori Loughlin and several corporate CEOs.

Officials said parents paid Singer “approximately $25 million” from 2011-February 2019 “to bribe coaches and university administrators to designate their children as recruited athletes, or other favored admissions categories, in violation of the duty of honest services the coaches and administrators owed to their employers, thereby facilitating the children’s admission to the universities,” according to court documents released last week. 

UCLA and its athletic department released a joint statement last week, acknowledging the claims.

“The conduct alleged in the filings revealed today is deeply disturbing and in contrast with the expectations we have of our coaches to lead their teams with honesty and integrity,” the statement read.”If the facts alleged are true, they represent a grave departure from the ethical standards we set for ourselves and the people who work here.”

A former Bruins All-American player, Salcedo went 182-89-42 during his coaching career with UCLA. He led the team to the NCAA Tournament in 14 of his 15 seasons and won six conference titles.
