ESTEBAN OCON has been slammed as "an embarrassment" for causing the crash with Max Verstappen, which resulted in their bust-up.

The duo came to blows and needed to be separated by officials after the Brazilian GP when Ocon tried to unlap himself and crashed into race-leader Verstappen.

The Red Bull star was sent spinning off, gifting the win to Lewis Hamilton, leaving Verstappen livid and he lashed out at the Frenchman.

And former world champion, Jacques Villeneuve, has piled into Ocon for causing the smash in the first place.

He said: "Ocon is an embarrassment. That was ridiculous. And the worst bit is everyone has seen what happened, and on the radio not even a 'sorry guys, I was wrong.'

"It's good to accept you're wrong.

"You can unlap yourself, but do it properly. You're not allowed to put the leader at risk at all. You don't do something that loses time for the other driver, and is taking a risk.

"Overtaking on the straight and you're in front is fine. But that looked like it was a battle for the lead.

"But also it shows he has no racecraft, zero racecraft whatsoever.

"All the incidents in the last two years where maybe it's his fault, maybe it's not, you can kind of think that maybe he was in the wrong, because he hasn't read the race properly.

"And he never learns, because it's never his fault, ever."

Ocon was given three-penalty points on his licence and a 10-second stop and go penalty during the race – the toughest sentence available to stewards other that a disqualification.

And Verstappen was later given two-days of community service to be carried out under the sport's governing body's jurisdiction for the aggressive altercation.

Race Director, Charlie Whiting added: "He's absolutely allowed to unlap himself. That's clear. It's happened many times in the past.

"But of course you expect it to be done safely, but more to the point, I think it should be done cleanly and absolutely without fighting. You shouldn't be fighting to get past.

"If he's got the pace, then normally one would expect Red Bull to say Ocon's got the pace, just let him through, that sort of thing.

"But it seemed that he just went for it, and it was just a bit unfortunate that he decided to fight for it which was wholly unacceptable."

Meanwhile, Hamilton has waded into the row and says he felt Verstappen was to blame for causing the accident on lap 44.

He said: "You can never assume that the person is not up your inside because he's a backmarker and he's going to back off.

"You've got to assume, you've got to be acknowledge the fact that he may be there so I'm going to leave extra space. Because actually he's in a different race to me.

"So from my seat it felt like it wasn't 100 percent one side. More like maybe it's 60-40.
"Ultimately when you're in Ocon's position you've got nothing to lose.

"You want to get through. You've got much quicker tyres. You're trapped if you got much quicker tyres and the guy in front it's not pushing.

"So he's cruising, holding him up. You're going to go for it try and get by and move yourself forwards.
"I felt like it was fair game for him to try to un-lap himself. Of course you don't want to cause an incident.

"But in those scenarios you give each other space. It's as simple as that. It's so simple to give each other space."
