England captain Harry Kane blasts referee and accuses him of ‘bottling it’ by disallowing Danny Welbeck’s last-minute equaliser

HARRY KANE claims the referee "bottled it" in a scathing attack on the officials after England had a late goal ruled out during their Nations League clash with Spain.

The Three Lions fell 2-1 to Luis Enrique's Spaniards at Wembley after Saul Niguez and Rodrigo cancelled out Marcus Rashford's early opener.

But Gareth Southgate's men could feel slightly aggrieved that they did not nick a point as Danny Welbeck had a stoppage time goal harshly ruled out for a foul on David De Gea.

The Arsenal striker, on as a late sub, tapped the ball home from close range after De Gea came to collect a ball and fell on him, dropping the ball at Welbeck's feet.

Asked if the decision from the Dutch official to disallow the goal was wrong, Kane blasted: "100 per cent. In those big moments you need a ref to stay strong but he has bottled it.

"Danny has just stood there and De Gea has fallen on top of him and he's given a foul somehow.

"In those big moments you need a firm ref who doesn’t go giving wrong decision under pressure so it's disappointing. We deserved a draw at least."

Kane added: "Sometimes the keeper gets better treatment than the rest of us so that’s unfortunate.

"It was a good game and a real test against a team who keeps the ball well at stages and it was difficult but we had a good spell in the second half and we probably created the better chances."

England attempted to play Spain at their own game throughout the match, and skipper Kane, who received his World Cup Golden Boot before the game, hailed his side's efforts.

He said: "It's tough. We tried to press and play high intensity without the ball and they are a very good team they pop it around you so its tough.

"This is what this competition is about, we want to play the best and they are one of them. We could definitely have been more clinical but we can hold our heads high."

Southgate was also fuming with the officials over Welbecks disallowed goal – and felt it cost them a point

Southgate agreed with his captain on the Welbeck goal that wasn't, and added: "Their two centre backs have come together to block Danny and it is clear he just stands there and De Gea comes over the top of him and drops it.

"Everybody sees it should have been a goal"

Kane also expects Luke Shaw to come back better than ever after yet another injury following a horror clash of heads with Spain full-back Dani Carvajal.

Kane said: "It's never nice to see someone go down especially like that.

"It looked horrible but hopefully he is all good."

Southgate added: "Thankfully Luke is up and talking and he needs to be assessed but he played very well and produced a great ball for Marcus Rashford's goal."
