Manchester United’s season is entering the pivotal stage; they can still claw things back in some quarters, but they have eleven points to usurp if they want to get into the top four conversations.

They’re in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup; their Carabao Cup success last season papered over some cracks, and they could well offer them another glimmer of hope this season. Erik Ten Hag’s position will be under harsh scrutiny if he doesn’t win the FA Cup or finish in the top four.

If United isn’t in a good place, Everton is even in worse shape; five points above the relegation zone having played a game more than Luton isn’t something to brag about at this stage. The only reason they can sleep with one eye closed now is because the FA restored four of the ten points they took from them.

The quality in the Everton squad is good enough to stay up, but the teams below them don’t want to lose their top flight status either; you’re only as good as your last game, and, at the end of the day, you’ll need to play your part in your own story.

Everton failed to win any of their last five games, losing at home to West Ham last weekend, with Beto missing from the spot before he headed home what eventually became a consolation goal. Sean Dyche must do something about their form.

Manchester United lost pathetically at their neighbors’ doorsteps last weekend; they flattered to deceive, and Marcus Rashford must take certain blame for their woes. You won’t get too many chances against a team like City; if you fail to take them, they will punish you without remorse.

How will they line up for this game? Rasmus Hojlund could be back for the FA Cup game against Liverpool, but this game comes too soon for him. Rashford and Johnny Evans are both fit and available to face Everton; expect Ten Hag to deploy the same trio of Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, and Rashford upfront.

Everton’s injury woes are easing up; only Arnaut Danjuma and Dele Alli are notable absentees. Idrissa Gueye could feature if he passes a late fitness test. The Reverse Fixture saw the introduction of Koby Mainoo; he has been a revelation for the Red Devils since that full debut.

Garnacho’s sensational overhead kick will be replayed many times at Old Trafford before kickoff. It was a game Everton played with strong character, but they failed to take their chances, and United stepped up to the plate. It’s take two at Old Trafford.

Verdict: United to win
