Bayern Munich clawed things back to overturn a first-leg loss away at Lazio to book a spot in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League.

Life at Munich has been a little tough recently, with the German champions looking likely to relinquish their reigns this season to Bayer Leverkusen. Having won the title eleven times in a row, a ten-point gap at this stage looks difficult to usurp.

The second leg started the same way the first ended three weeks ago: Lazio came out to attack. Mauricio Sarri had said in his presser that his team could not afford to defend for 100 minutes; they had chances early on but couldn’t take any.

Harry Kane headed home with seven minutes left in the first half to level the tie and hand Bayern the lead on the night. Lazio caved in from there, and the Italian side soon fell behind in the tie by conceding a goal at the death in the first half.

Mathis De Ligt sent a beauty of a curler in and wheeled away in celebrations, but replays showed it went in off the head of Thomas Muller. Lazio began to play the occasion from there and only had one real chance in the second half to show some fight.

Luis Alberto’s deflected strike was the closest they got, but that was after Harry Kane had tapped home the third. With Thomas Tuchel set to depart at the end of the season, Bayern Munich has it all to do to redeem their season; if it’s not working in the league, they must find a way in Europe.

Elsewhere on the night, Kylian Mbappe scored twice to help PSG pass Real Sociedad in Spain. The French superstar curled one home in the first half from a tight angle before racing through to score the second before the hour mark.

Mikel Merino scored a consolation goal for the hosts late in the game, but it didn’t stop the French champions from running away with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.
