Manchester United could go level on points with Tottenham and only behind on goal difference with a win over Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday; that’s a huge incentive for the Red Devils.

The Lilywhites are nine points clear of the drop zone; they’re not in immediate danger, but it would offer them more peace to steer further clear, and a win over Manchester United, something they’re not famous for, could offer them that.

It’s not often said, but Manchester United has won each of their last five games in all competitions. They will love to keep the momentum going, and it’s also important that they learn to close games early to avoid late struggles.

Man U struggled late on against Luton and were only lucky to scrape the 2-1 win at the end. The Hatters had chances to bury United but didn’t take their chances. United wouldn’t want such developments going forward.

Fulham’s season is on a downward spiral, and that must worry Marco Silva. The Lilywhites have won only one of their last five games, and that was the surprise 3-1 win over Bournemouth. Losing healthy leads like they did at Burnley is another problem they must fix.

The bad news for the hosts is the absence of Rasmus Hojlund. The Dane is finding his feet in the league and also finding the back of the net; in fact, he has scored in each of United's last five games. He will be sorely missed.

Raul Jimenez is also unavailable for Fulham; Brazilian striker Rodrigo Muniz will continue upfront; and the return to fitness of Adama Traore should be a big boost too. Alex Iwobi and Tom Cairney are the creative outlets, as well as Antony Robinson and Willian, who will face a late fitness test.

United will also be without Luke Shaw, whose season could be over, according to Erik Ten Hag. This is an opportunity for Antony to return to the squad; Marcus Rashford is expected to go upfront, while Alejandro Garnacho and the Brazilian are expected on his flanks.

Bruno Fernandes must impose himself on this game; United must not lose the momentum they have, as it would come in handy in the thick run of games coming up. Fulham could treat this as a free hit; it’s United’s game to lose.

Verdict: Straight win for United.
