Champions League: Time for Arsenal to show they deserve respect

After ramming six past West Ham on Sunday, Arsenal’s next focus is a round of sixteen game in the Champions League against FC Porto.

It’s a hurdle the Gunners struggled with in the past; a run of consecutive second-round defeats culminated in a seven-year absence from the tournament, and, on their return this season, Arsenal has a point to prove.

Arsenal has a 100% record in the League this season, beating Crystal Palace 5-0, Nottingham Forest 2-1, the big win over title rivals Liverpool, and the weekend annihilation of the Hammers right in front of the London Stadium fans.

What is Arsenal expecting from this game? While it’s an away game, fans will not expect their team to disappoint. The dream is to end the tie in the first leg; the odd feeling of what happened against a Portuguese team last season in the Europa League will continue to ring in their heads.

Arsenal was the clear favourite against Sporting Lisbon last season, but after a costly draw in Lisbon—the game where Arsenal lost William Saliba for the rest of the season—the second leg at the Emirates broke the Gunners’ season after penalties.

Arsenal has a near-fit squad, and that should delight Mikel Arteta. Emile Smith Rowe joins Fabio Vieira and Thomas Partey on the injury list, but ESR is expected back at the weekend, and the other two are nearing full fitness.

Gabriel Jesus is believed to be available for selection as he rested at the weekend. Not many would expect Arteta to drop Leandro Trossard in any case. The Belgian rose to the occasion in the absence of Gabriel Jesus; he deserves his run.

Alex Zinchenko is another absentee; he is also believed to be available for selection, but in his absence, Jacob Kiwior did the job. The Ukrainian is expected to return to Europe on Wednesday. It’s a game Arsenal is expected to win; they must show they deserve to be where they are.
