Manchester City rolled back the years in an emphatic 3-0 win over Wolves on Sunday and momentarily heaped pressure on log leaders Arsenal by closing the gap at the top to just two points.

Erling Haaland completed his hattrick before the hour mark to take his season tally to 31 goals, the fastest player ever to four hattricks in the league and just halfway gone in the league, the big Norwegian has surpassed the golden boot tally for last season already.

Wolves held their own for almost the entirety of the first half, referee David Coote had a difficult game by all standards and Wolves didn’t have a single touch in the City penalty area throughout the first half. It took a routine Kevin De Bruyne cross to settle the first half affairs.

Riyad Mahrez, rewarded alongside Jack Grealish with another starting role rolled the ball to De Bruyne and the Belgian wizard sent a first time cross for Haaland to head home; Grealish had a fierce effort cleared off the line not long afterwards but he’d argue he should have had a penalty a moment earlier.

Rico Lewis was removed at halftime, the young lad struggled in the first half and was saved by the referee on one occasion. Wolves made triple sub at the start of the second half with new signing Pablo Sarabia coming on to make his debut alongside Mattheus Cunha and Joao Moutinho.

The second half was quite straightforward; Grealish was denied a stone wall penalty in the first half but Ilkay Gundogan wasn’t at the start of the second half; Haaland sent Jose Sa the wrong way for his 24thleague goal of the season.

Jose Sa fumbled an attempt to play out from the back not long after, Mahrez intercepted and fed the super striker upfront; Haaland slapped it home from close range and his day was done. Pep Guardiola removed him and the rest of the game became a formality.

The win took City to just two points off Arsenal who would host Manchester United shortly after the City game.
