Arsenal lost their 100% home record on Tuesday as Newcastle held the Gunners to a goalless draw at the Emirates in a high-energy game that saw a flurry of bookings and few real chances.

Arsenal had a late penalty appeal that was turned down by referee Andy Madley and the VAR but earlier in the second half, Dan Burn’s tug at Gabriel’s shirt in the Newcastle area should have been awarded as a penalty.

Newcastle stays third after a spirited defending that saw them continue their impressive record of not conceding a goal in over nine hours of football spanning ten games of clean sheets. The Magpies have only lost once this season, the last-gasp loss at Liverpool.

Arsenal dominated the encounter and would feel bitter for two points dropped but they stay eight points clear of Manchester City in second. The Champions don’t play until Thursday when they travel to Stamford Bridge to entertain Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta was left fuming after the game, calling the referee’s decision not to award Arsenal a penalty “scandalous” and it’s left to be seen how the PGMOL reacts to that. Arsenal’s next league game is away at Tottenham, another pivotal game in the title race.

Before then, the Gunners will play Oxford in the FA Cup and fringe players are expected to prosecute the game to afford first-team players enough rest. Arsenal is also expected to bring in bodies in the transfer window with a deal for Ukraine winger Mhikalo Murdruyk said to be advanced.

Elsewhere on the night, Manchester United closed in on Newcastle with an emphatic 3-0 win at home to Bournemouth, Erik Ten Hag’s side did their business cleanly and are now only fourth on goal difference, knocking hard on the third spot.

Luke Shaw opened the scoring before Casemiro fired in the second goal in fine fashion off a Bruno Fernandes set piece. Marcus Rashford continued his fine form with a sensational team goal at the death to complete the route.
