Tottenham's Son avoids military duty as South Korea win Asian Games

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min will not be participating in a 'compulsory' military duty for South Korea after helping his country to win the Asian Games football final.

An Asian Games gold medal, along with an Olympic medal, is the only way a South Korean can avoid a Military call-up.

The final match against Japan went into extra-time before Lee Seungwoo and Hwang Hee Chan score two goals to put South Korea 2-0 ahead.

Ueda Ayase reduced the deficit for Japan but South Korea held on.

Spurs attacker son has not served the compulsory two-year military service and was on the verge of getting a call-up if South Korea had not won the final.

The Asian game's victory earned the whole South Korea team an exemption and ended any speculation surrounding the Tottenham player.

Though South Korea won the gold medal at the 2014 Asian games after beating neighbours North Korea but Son was not in the squad as his club during the time - Bayer Leverkusen refused to release him.
