Floyd Mayweather’s Protege Curmel Moton Wins Pro Debut

By Vince D’Writer: In the walkout bout on the Canelo vs Charlo pay-per-view card, Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s 17-year-old protege Curmel Moton made his highly anticipated pro debut as he scored a first round stoppage over Ezequiel Flores (4-1, 3 KOs).

Floyd Mayweather has publicly displayed an extreme amount of confidence in his young protege and during his pro debut, Curmel Moton showed why Mayweather believes he’s going to be the next star of boxing. During his brief debut Moton demonstrated speed, power, and accuracy.

Curmel Moton is a decorated amateur who has enjoyed the luxury of having the best resources available. He has been under the mentorship of Floyd Mayweather for a significant amount of time, and he’s been able to sharpen his skills by sparring elite boxers such as Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson.

Moton has dominated the amateur scene as he is an 18-time national champion who held a number one ranking. With nothing left to prove on the amateur level, Moton and his team felt that he was ready to make his debut as a professional boxer.

Once the bell rang to start the opening round of the featherweight bout, Moton came out pressing forward, using foot feints, and throwing a fast sharp jab. While continuing to fight off the front foot, Moton landed a right to the body followed by a three punch combination.

The teenage prodigy continued to press forward while working off the jab. He landed a big right hand that stunned Flores, and then he followed it up with a left that sent Flores down to the canvas. Flores was able to get up, but Moton proceeded to deliver a 20 punch combination that forced the referee to step in and put a halt to the contest.

Curmel Moton (1-0, 1 KO) showed why so many people in the boxing community have nothing but praise for him. Despite the fact that it was a small sample size, it was easy to see that Moton has the potential to become a world champion in the near future.

During the post-fight press conference, a member of the media referenced Shakur Stevenson stating Curmel Moton’s style reminds him of Naoya Inoue. Moton appreciated the quote and then he gave his opinion in reference to the quote.

“I’ve known Shakur for a long time throughout the amateurs. He watched me grow up in the amateurs. With the comparison, I mean Inoue is a solid fighter and he has skills. He’s fast, strong, but I feel like I’ll be a lot bigger than him. I’ll be a better fighter than him when it’s all said and done.”

Curmel Moton had a successful debut, and despite the fact that the fight was brief, it’s still easy to see that this young boxer has a potent skill set. During the post-fight press conference Floyd Mayweather continued to praise his fighter and he also gave the media his prediction for the future.

“I told you guys about Gervonta “Tank” Davis, you guys did listen. I told you about how easy the Pacquiao fight was going to be and you guys said it wasn’t so. I’m like Nostradamus, when I predict something it’s going to be what it’s going to be. So within 24 months he (Curmel) will be a millionaire.”
