UK announces 26 new sanctions against Russian individuals and defense entities – JURIST

The UK on Thursday announced 26 new Sanctions against Russian individuals and entities that continue to support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. The reasons behind the new sanctions, according to UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, are Putin’s renewed military assault on Ukraine’s eastern regions. and new intelligence revealing that Russian forces intentionally bombed critical and civilian infrastructure in Mariupol. Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the UK has repeatedly imposed new rounds of sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for Russia’s war. With the new sanctions in place, the UK has now sanctioned over £900bn of global assets from banks and oligarchs with a net worth of approximately £200bn. The new sanctions target key leaders in Russia’s military, as well as individuals and entities outside the military that are actively supporting the war effort. Within the armed forces, the sanctions target the Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant Colonel Azatbek Omurbekov, the Commander of the Airborne Forces, Colonel General Andrey Serdyukov, the Commander of the Special Operations Forces, Major General Valery Flyustikov, and the First Deputy Chief of the Colonel of the General Staff Nikolay Bogdanovsky. Non-military individuals and entities subject to the new sanctions include Russian Railways CEO and Chairman Oleg Belozyorov and defecting Ukrainian parliamentarian Ilya Kiva. The UK also accelerated 19 additional individual and entity sanctions to align with sanctions issued by the UK’s allies in the G7 and the EU. These sanctions include the First Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Security Service, Sergei Borisovich Korolyov, the Russian developer and manufacturer of military equipment Kalashnikov Concern, the Arzamas machine-building plant, the Military Industrial Company and the leasing company Russia’s largest transport company GTLK. Commenting on the new sanctions, Truss said: “The UK is unwavering in our support for Ukraine and in holding Putin and his regime to account. Today’s new wave of sanctions hits the generals and defense companies with blood on their hands.” The UK said it plans to continue using the sanctions to retaliate against Putin’s war efforts and support Ukraine.
