Under the direction of Beckie Costanzo, the BHS Drama Club has embarked on a truly ambitious production for its spring musical. The SpongeBob Musical (book by Kyle Jarrow; based on the series by Stephen Hillenburg; musical production conceived by Tina Landau; presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals) is a Tony-nominated musical based on the popular animated television series. The show features original songs by Yolanda Adams, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Edward Sharpe’s Alex Ebert and The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, TI and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional music is by Tom Kitt and additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton. The residents of Bikini Bottom face the biggest challenge of their lives when Mount Humongous threatens to erupt and destroy their world. Amid the chaos and fear, an unlikely hero emerges to save the city, along with his stalwart “team of three.” SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy must overcome obstacles, including self-doubt, prejudice against mammals, and Plankton’s evil plans, to stop the volcano from erupting and save Bikini Bottom. This family musical celebrates the power of optimism, friendship, and acceptance. “With a cast of 21 high school students, four high school students and one teacher, this is the largest production we’ve attempted to date,” said Costanzo. “Not to mention our team, made up of seven more high school students and six more high school students!” Managing such a large production has been both a challenge and a blessing for the club and its leaders. Vice Principal Julie Snoeck said, “We could never do this without the cooperation of so many students who are willing to step up, learn new skills and work together as a team.” In addition to the acting, singing, and dancing that take place on stage, this extravaganza will feature the talents of various art students and carpenters who helped paint and build sets. Senior Lupita Tejeda, who plays the character of Karen, will take her final bow at BHS, after participating in the Drama Club for all four years of high school. “I am proud of the returning club members for stepping up and leading the new members…I am happy that SpongeBob SquarePants, one of my childhood favorites, is my last show,” she said. “I’m glad I was able to see the growth of the club.” Junior Trey Ford, who plays the character of Patrick, agreed, noting that “the best part of doing this amazing show was seeing how many new faces we had.” General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children. A family pass is available for $35 and covers all family members living under one roof. With two adults, the family pass is the cheapest option from the third child. On Wednesday, April 20, local students at Thomson Elementary and Beaver Valley Elementary Schools will enjoy a preview performance and receive a coupon for $2 off the price of admission. The BHS Drama Club hopes this discount will make the show more accessible for families to attend. BMS and BHS students and faculty will enter for free with their ID. Commonsensemedia.org rates this title as suitable for ages six and up.
