Despite glimpses of improvement from the home side, a resilient and organised Brighton ensured they remained the dominant force on the pitch for the majority of the game, with much left to be desired of the Red Devils moving forward.

Passive in their application, United failed to stamp their authority on the opposition at Old Trafford from the first whistle. A lack of discipline combined with a tinge of apathy saw United concede twice in the first half, with the team struggling to create chances whilst failing to dominate the midfield moving into the break.

Having failed in gaining momentum in the second half, a scrappy own goal by Alexis Mac Allister saw United find the back of the net in the 68th minute. Despite a handful of substitutions by Ten Hag following the goal, the Red Devils eventually failed to find the equaliser, with the Dutchman expected to severely scrutinise the performance ahead of the trip to Brentford next Saturday.

Starting XI

David De Gea (GK) – 5/10

Although decent between the sticks, De Gea struggled to cope with the distribution demands required by Ten Hag for most of the game on Sunday. Expected to retain his place between the sticks, the Spaniard will be Keen on addressing his weaknesses over the coming weeks.

Diogo Dalot (RB) – 4/10

Inadequate in executing his duties efficiently, Dalot remained a liability during defensive transitions against Brighton. With much remaining to be desired of him, the full-back will be keen on significantly improving his performance over the coming weeks.

Harry Maguire (RCB) – 6/10

Decent on the ball and in executing his defensive duties, Maguire emerged amongst the team’s reliable players on Sunday. Having shown a gradual improvement in his displays since pre-season, the centre-back will be keen on finding consistency over the coming weeks.

Lisandro Martinez (LCB) – 6/10

An impressive debut saw Martinez deliver a notable performance against Brighton. Despite having shown signs of vulnerability, the Argentinian centre-back will be keen on quickly adapting to the pace of the Premier League over the coming fixtures.

Luke Shaw (LB) – 3/10

Partly at fault for both goals on Sunday afternoon, Shaw failed to deliver a notable performance against Brighton. With Tyrell Malacia providing adequate competition, Shaw will be hoping to improve his performances over the coming weeks.

Fred (CDM) – 2/10

Unreliable in possession, Fred failed to impose himself across the middle third of the pitch against Brighton. Although having been deployed in an unfavourable position, much remains to be desired of the Brazilian who has struggled to deliver consistent performances in recent outings.

Scott McTominay (CM) – 2/10

Careless in possession and unreliable in executing his defensive duties, McTominay failed to deliver an adequate performance on Sunday. Although having been deployed in a relatively advanced role, the Scotsman struggled to positively contribute to the team’s display against Brighton.

Jadon Sancho (RW) – 6/10

Amongst United’s better-performing attackers on the pitch, Sancho displayed adequate promise moving into the attacking third. With the team heavily reliant on his creativity, the winger will be looking to provide a substantial contribution over the coming weeks.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM) – 4/10

Unnoticeable for most of the game, Fernandes failed to have a positive impact against Brighton on Sunday. Seemingly struggling to adapt to his new role, the midfielder will be looking to return to his best form over the coming weeks.

Marcus Rashford (LW) – 4/10

Underwhelming in his impact on the game, Rashford failed to convert a couple of goal-scoring chances against Brighton. Although expected to retain his spot in the starting line-up next week, the winger will be keen on performing to the best of his abilities moving forward.

Christian Eriksen (ST) – 6/10

Arguably United’s best player on the pitch, Eriksen ensured the Red Devils remained in the game for most of the ninety minutes. Deployed in a deeper role for the majority of the second half, the Danish midfielder executed his role proficiently against Brighton on Sunday.

Decent in possession, Van de Beek emerged as a positive introduction to the game against Brighton. Having shown glimpses of his potential during pre-season, the Dutch midfielder will be keen on fighting for a spot in the starting line-up over the coming weeks.

Tyrell Malacia (LB) – 6/10

Introduced in the game’s dying minutes, Malacia will be keen on challenging for the left-back spot over the coming weeks. Having delivered promising performances during pre-season, the Dutch international will be looking to make the best of his opportunities moving forward.

Anthony Elanga (RW) – 6/10

Expected to serve as a squad player under Ten Hag, Elanga will be hoping to make the best of his cameos over the coming weeks. With the team short on attacking options, the young winger is likely to receive adequate game-time throughout the campaign.

Alejandro Garnacho (LW) – 6/10
