Arsenal Striker Set to Sign New Long-term Contract and Extend his Stay at the Emirates Stadium

According to latest reports, Eddie Nketiah has decided to sign a new long-term contract and extend his stay at Arsenal. The 22-year-old striker’s previous deal with the Gunners was about to end next month and he would have become a free agent.

The youngster has had limited first-team chances this season. He wasn’t even a part of the team until November last year. However, he was decisive in Arsenal’s charge for the top-four spot, scoring against Chelsea and Leeds United as well as on the final day of the season against Everton. During the 2021-22 campaign, the Englishman netted 10 times and assisted once in 28 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) across all competitions.

Nketiah attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, including West Ham and Crystal Palace. During the January transfer window, Bayer Leverkusen and Newcastle United tried to sign the striker, but failed due to Arteta’s insistence on keeping him. Nevertheless, it now seems that the youngster has decided to turn down all of them and favour his boyhood Club by renewing his deal.

Earlier this week, as reported in the Daily Mail, Arsenal have submitted a final offer of a new contract to striker Eddie Nketiah. It was stated that this was going to be last approach from the Gunners’ side and the final chance for the forward to sign a new deal.

Mikel Arteta & Co. are willing to offer a five-year deal which will let Nketiah earn £100,000-per-week in wages. The offer also included an additional signing on bonus, which is believed to be in the region of £5 million.

Now, according to The Athletic, Eddie Nketiah has decided to make a U-turn and commit his future to Arsenal by signing a new long-term contract. He was earlier expected to leave the club on a free transfer but has cited his desire to play under Mikel Arteta as the reason to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners earlier attempted to keep the 22-year-old by offering multiple extension offers. But it was to no avail. However, he is now willing to stay at the North London club after a possible verbal guarantee that he would be the club’s first-team striker, allowing him to perform consistently and score goals regularly.

The exact details of the deal aren’t known yet as it is still in the process of being finalised, but Eddie Nketiah’s decision to stay and show his relevance in the first-team over the past couple of weeks is a serotonin boost for Mikel Arteta. This also means that Arteta now has to look for just one new forward – with Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus being a favourite on his summer transfer wish list.

Meanwhile, Alexandre Lacazette is still expected to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of next month. Much like Nketiah, Mohamed Elneny’s decision to put pen on paper for a new deal added up to Arsenal’s happiness. However, the Gunners will still try to push through and look for a number of new signings this summer, who will bolster their chances in the new season.
