Arsenal Revive Interest in €70m Rated Argentine Striker, One of the Prime Targets for the Summer Window

As reported in The Times, Arsenal have rekindled their interest in signing Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Gunners are looking to bolster their attack as they seem almost certain to qualify for the Champions League next season

Arsenal tried very hard to bring the Argentine striker to the Emirates Stadium last year. Signing a forward last summer was a must for Arteta and Martinez was the primary choice. However, the deal couldn’t be completed and the Gunners went on without signing anyone.

Rather, they decided to rely on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah. While Aubameyang left in January, Lacazette and Nketiah are set to leave with their contracts expiring this summer. It is a total blur at the moment.

Arsenal are drowning in a real puddle of danger. Hence, Arteta needs to fill this frontline vaccuum and will be looking to swoop up some great signings this summer to cover the gap, especially a recognized striker that will breathe new life into the team.

Arsenal currently stand fourth in the Premier League, four points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. This keeps their dream of playing in the Champions League alive. Therefore, reports of Arsenal looking to renew their pursuit of Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan should come as no surprise.

The 24-year-old joined the Nerazurri at the begining of the 2018-19 season. So far, the Argentine has made 178 appearances for the Italian side, scoring 72 goals and assisting 23 times (stats via Transfermarkt). This season, he has racked up 23 goals and registered 3 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions.

In his youth, Martinez played as a central defender before establishing himself as a forward. His prolific goalscoring, impressive dribbling, and classy finishing could be very useful for Mikel Arteta’s side. His valuable goal contributions could prove to be fruitful for the North London side, who are keen on rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

However, the Argentine will not come cheap. Besides, the centre-forward is contracted to the Serie A club till 2026, having extended his deal last October. Inter Milan are looking to fill up their pockets by selling the forward and have set a high asking price of £70 million.

The high price tag might force Arsenal to explore and weigh other possible options, that are more pocket-friendly to sign in the summer. Arteta also has a few other red-hot prospects he wishes to bring to the Emirates. Big names include Man City’s Gabriel Jesus, Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven and Everton’ Dominic Calvert- Lewin.

Jesus is expected to make a move away from the Etihad this summer, with City closing in on Erling Haaland. Everton’s marksman Calvert-Lewin is also said to be on Arteta’s radar for quite a time. With a restriction due to the financial fair play regulations, the Toffees seem keen on selling a few of their players.

Cody Gakpo is another striker who has gained the interest of the North London side and is being considered as a potential summer signing for the Gunners. Arsenal is now fully poised to welcome offensive summer arrivals. Who the board signs is all just a matter of time and we will get to know soon enough.
