Seven games into the season and already we are starting to see the Premier League’s top scorers take shape. Many predicted the big clubs’ summer spending will have a major impact on this year’s title and that may very well be the case.

It was a drama-filled transfer window as Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata seemingly switched destination as they moved to Manchester United and Chelsea respectively. As for Arsenal, they broke their bank to sign Alexandre Lacazette and whilst Manchester City already had the ever-reliable Sergio Aguero, this season Pep Guardiola was experimenting with two up top with Gabriel Jesus partnering the Argentine.

Not to forget Liverpool’s summer acquisition in Mohamed Salah, boasting an incredible front three but the star man who’s been there and done it all is none other than Tottenham’s Harry Kane. The Englishman overtook Lukaku in the dying stages of last season, scoring seven goals in two games to take his tally to 29 and pip the Belgian to the Golden Boot. Will he do the same this year?

Let’s take a look at the contenders for this season.

Romelu Lukaku

Of course, Lukaku was going to make this list and just like every season he’s had in the last few years, the Belgian already started to score plenty of goals. The 24-year-old striker made the biggest move of his career to Manchester United and showed exactly why they splashed the cash on him this summer as he takes his tally to 7 goals in 7 games. Such is the power of the Belgian that in the last three seasons, he’s bagged 50 goals.

It’s the style of Lukaku that makes him incredibly difficult to handle. His ability to use his strength to keep the ball and lay it off to his teammates is essential to Jose Mourinho’s style of play and will play a major role. However, it’s his clinical finishing that may prove to be the difference between who gets top scorer.

Harry Kane

The Tottenham striker is slowly starting to enter the bracket of world-class as his consistency in front of goal has made him a standout striker. At only 24, Kane has always scored more than 20 goals when he’s played a full season and it doesn’t look like that’s going to be any different in 2017/18. 29 goals from 30 games last season meant Kane was in terrific form and his six goals in this year’s campaign already show he’s not stopping anytime soon.

Mauricio Pochettino will be delighted that he has managed to keep his talented squad bar one major exit in Kyle Walker, but keeping Harry Kane is vital to Spurs’ chances of winning the league. On a personal level, Kane’s excellence in front of goal puts him as a no-brainer to compete for the Golden Boot and as it’s a World Cup year next season, the in-form Englishman will be looking to strike fear in his opponents in preparation for the big stage.

Alvaro Morata

When Chelsea signed Morata, many fans were shocked to see him in blue as he looked destined for Old Trafford, but after a few games, it’s easy to say those same fans are extremely happy Antonio Conte signed him. Having demonstrated his coolness in front of goal, Morata already has a Premier League hat-trick to his name and has assisted twice in his first six games.

With six goals in total, Morata has taken his fine form at his Real Madrid career and continued it at Stamford Bridge. His current injury lay-off may dent his chances to win top scorer, but you wouldn’t put it past him to score plenty more goals throughout the season to definitely be a solid contender.

Alexandre Lacazette

The Frenchman was Arsenal’s record-money buy and you can see why as he started his Gunners’ career in style, scoring after just two minutes at the Emirates Stadium. He has gone on to score three more goals since, taking his tally to four from six starts. The prolific goalscorer provides a big upgrade from the seasons before for Arsene Wenger and will be pivotal if Wenger wants to make the Champions League spots.

With compatriot Olivier Giroud a substitute player now, Lacazette has centre-stage and it’s his ice-cool finishes that have caught the eye of the fans. Being renowned for his ability to flawlessly tuck away penalties too, and having scored one already, he will be in contention to win this season’s Golden Boot for sure.

Sergio Aguero

When talking about goals, it’s almost essential you mention Manchester City superstar, Sergio Aguero. Just the mention of his name will bring back memories of that epic title-winning goal and it’s not just the quantity of his goals, but the quality too. The 29-year-old has scored 128 Premier League goals to date, an incredible stat considering he has spent so many days out injured.

It is the concern amongst City fans that if Aguero gets injured, they will lack a serial goalscorer but when fit, and if he can stay fit, City will know they have one of the best forwards in the world in their ranks. Every season he finishes up there somewhere in the top scorers’ list, so you can count on him to be there again.

Gabriel Jesus

Well if Pep Guardiola is ever worried about Agüero missing games due to injury, which he already has, there is a man who can step up to the plate. 20-year-old Gabriel Jesus is one of the hottest young properties out there in world football today, and even though his age may depict immaturity, lack of confidence and insecurity, Jesus is actually playing beyond his years.

He’s only playing his fourth professional season of his career but he already has 11 goals for Man City in the last 16 games. This season he has four of those in only six games and whether he’s partnered with Agüero or playing in his absence, Jesus is one to watch as a contender.

Jamie Vardy

One man who certainly hasn’t lost his spirit is Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy. Having broken the record for most consecutive goals two seasons ago, consequently scoring 24 goals in the title-winning campaign, Vardy had really come into his own under Claudio Ranieri and made the England squad that year too. With 13 goals the season after, Vardy didn’t hit those dizzy heights with Craig Shakespeare but this season, he’s already scored just under half.

Five goals from seven games is no mean feat and has helped Leicester stay just above the relegation zone as they look to climb up the table. Although two have come from penalties, and one missed, Vardy is going to be the star man for the Foxes again this season and his form will be vital in keeping his side from sinking into the drop zone.

Sadio Mane

Liverpool boast one of the best attacking line-ups in the league and it’s no secret they have a rich vein of pace, power and scoring ability. To pick just one is difficult but if there is anyone that can regularly find the back of the net, it’s Sadio Mane. The tricky winger was a real threat for Jürgen Klopp last season and scored 13 goals as they finished in the Champions League spot.

Now this year, their aspirations are higher as they acquired Mohamed Salah, but it is Sane who will be looking to improve on his tally last year. His experience in the league will prove a valuable asset throughout the season. Not necessarily a striker, Sane’s goals will be even more impressive coming from the wing and although it’s unlikely he’ll finish top scorer, he is a solid contender for the personal accomplishment.

Javier Hernandez

West Ham’s summer signing Chicarito was considered a masterstroke by many as the Mexico international boasts a fantastic record in the Premier League. Having been a main part of Manchester United’s success earlier in his career, the 29-year-old returned to England after spending two years in Germany and has already found his shooting boots this season.

Slaven Bilic may be a man under pressure but if there’s one person he can rely on for goals, it’s Hernandez. Having scored three already in seven games, although the forward hasn’t got the team members of his competitors, he will do well to score well into the double figures this season – and that is a target we all know he can achieve.

With just nine of the Premier League’s best strikers on show here, we can already see how this year may just be the most competitive yet. Harry Kane may have edged it at the death last season but any of these players are capable of taking the Golden Boot trophy in 2017/18. Who will it be?
