Michigan hockey is No. 1 overall seed in NCAA tournament; WMU also a 1-seed

The Wolverines, who locked up their berth with a 4-3 win over Minnesota for the Big Ten Tournament title on Saturday night, open their Ncaa run against No.

Michigan coach Mel Pearson, answering questions on ESPNU's selection show, said his team, which features four of the top five picks in last summer's NHL draft, is prepared for the tournament.

That international experience, paired with Hobey Baker Award finalist Luke Hughes, a freshman defenseman, should have the Wolverines ready to go Friday.

Led by Ferschweiler and 26-goal scorer Ethen Frank, the Broncos surged to a 25-11-1 mark and a runner-up finish in the NCHC conference tournament on Saturday night.

American International went 1-0-1 against the Purple Eagles to end the Atlantic Hockey regular season in February; U-M, meanwhile, dominated them in back-to-back wins in Ann Arbor in November, with a combined 10-2 score.

It’s the second for the Wolverines, who also won the Big Ten title in 2016, beating Minnesota in St. Paul in the third season of the conference’s support of hockey.
