Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Daulton Varsho, a native of Marshfield and the first UW-Milwaukee alumnus to appear in the big leagues, got his first career start Tuesday against the Houston Astros.

It came in an unusual place; though Varsho is one of the more warmly regarded catching prospects in the game, he started in left field .
Varsho made his big-league debut July 30 and drew a walk as a pinch hitter against Pedro Baez of Los Angeles.
Also a Marshfield native, the elder Varsho played at UW-Oshkosh, spent eight years in the big leagues and rose up the ranks in the Phillies organization, even briefly serving as interim manager of the big-league club in 2004.
