UMass-Frozen Four: Amherst's Johnny Leonard stars for Minuteman hockey team he grew up cheering for

They were part of the loud raucous Mullins Center crowds that cheered the program to it’s only other Ncaa Tournament appearance before this year.

John Micheletto gets the credit for initially recruiting and signing him, but the roots of him landing at UMass go all the way back to Steve Lappas.

He sat back and enjoyed as his son became a standout, first in youth Hockey, Cathedral High School and then the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL and now at UMass.

After San Jose drafted him in the sixth round following a strong freshman season, Leonard is among the top scorers in the nation with 15 goals and 24 assists as a sophomore.

She was hired as the athletic department’s director of marketing and promotions last summer, allowing her to watch her brother’s rise up close.

He had a goal in each of UMass’ NCAA Tournament games including a nifty one against Notre Dame that helped put the Minutemen in the first Frozen Four in school history.
