Having carded an opening-day 66, the Spaniard was six-under for his round by the 12th hole for a share of the lead with Jamie Donaldson, who had topped the leaderboard on day one with a stunning 62.
Starting at the 10th hole, Jimenez (above) birdied five of his opening nine holes.
Most of the big names, such as Rory McIlroy and Masters champion Sergio Garcia , teed off later in the day in Dubai.
McIlroy began the day in a promising position on seven-under after his opening salvo of a 65 while Garcia was two strokes further behind the Northern Irishman.
