Thin at center with starter Spencer Long recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, the Redskins acquired center Lucas Crowley from the Pittsburgh Steelers via trade Wednesday night.
An undrafted free agent out of North Carolina, the 6-foot-3, 269-pound Crowley appeared in the Week 2 preseason game for Pittsburgh, playing 10 snaps.
He gives the Redskins another body at center behind rookie Chase Roullier, who has replaced Long in the starting lineup.
But rookie Joshua Holsey, a seventh-round pick out of Auburn, had recently received more action with the second team.
Phillips appeared in 11 games for Washington in 2015 and 2016, making a combined 14 tackles.
