IPL 2023 is just around the corner, with the 16th edition of the lucrative T20 league set to commence on Friday, March 31. As we look at the injury list of the players who might miss the upcoming IPL.

The opening match will feature defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

This year’s IPL promises to be an exciting one, with several interesting modifications set to be implemented. One such change is the introduction of the ‘Impact Player’ rule, which allows teams to substitute a player during the match.

Additionally, captains will now have the option to announce their playing XIs after the toss, giving them the flexibility to select the best possible combination based on the conditions and other scenarios.

Another exciting development is the use of DRS to review wide and no-ball calls. A feature previously only available in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

However, despite the buzz surrounding IPL 2023, a number of star players from various franchises will be absent due to injuries. A detailed injury list of these players can be found below.

Jasprit Bumrah- MI

Mumbai Indians’ Jasprit Bumrah, due to a recurring back injury, has not played since September 2022. He missed the Asia Cup, T20 World Cup, and Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah underwent back surgery in New Zealand and will be out for another six months.

Rishabh Pant- DC

In December 2022, DC’s captain Rishabh Pant had a terrible car crash. He’s now recovering from multiple injuries, but it’s unlikely he’ll return soon. Meanwhile, David Warner will lead the team without the Indian keeper-batter.

Jonny Bairstow- PBKS

Jonny Bairstow, England’s wicketkeeper-batter, won’t play in IPL 2023 due to a freak injury he suffered while playing golf last September. Australian all-rounder Matthew Short, who scored 458 runs in BBL 2022-23 and claimed 11 wickets with his off-spin, will replace him. Short, signed by Punjab Kings for ₹20 lakh, was the second-highest run-getter for Adelaide Strikers.

Prasidh Krishna- RR

Prasidh Krishna, RR’s fast bowler, won’t play IPL 2023 due to a lumbar stress fracture and had surgery. He hasn’t played since August 2022 and may miss the ODI World Cup. Sandeep Sharma, with 114 wickets in 104 IPL matches at an average of 26.33, will replace him. Surprisingly unsold at the auction, Rajasthan signed him for ₹50 lakh.

Kyle Jamieson- CSK

Kyle Jamieson, a New Zealand all-rounder, won’t play for Chennai Super Kings due to a back injury. To fill his place, CSK signed South African bowler Sisanda Magala, who has 12 wickets in 11 international games. Magala joins CSK at his base price of ₹50 lakh.

Jhye Richardson- MI

Jhye Richardson, the Australian fast bowler, won’t play in IPL 2023 because of hamstring problems that required surgery. Mumbai Indians bought him at the auction for ₹1.5 crore, but he won’t be able to play. He played for Punjab in IPL 2023 and took three wickets in three games.

Will Jacks- RCB

Will Jacks, an English batter bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for ₹3.2 crore at IPL 2023 auction, can’t play due to a muscle injury sustained while fielding in an ODI against Bangladesh. RCB will replace Jacks with Michael Bracewell, a New Zealand all-rounder, who will join the team for ₹1 crore, his base price.

Shreyas Iyer- KKR

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), could still play in IPL 2023 as he’s recovering from a recurring back injury. However, there are unconfirmed reports that suggest he might not be able to play at all. KKR has named Nitish Rana as the captain while Shreyas is out.

Rajat Patidar- RCB

Rajat Patidar, a batter for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), can’t play the first half of IPL 2023 because of a heel injury. He needs to rest for three weeks and then undergo an MRI to see if he can join the second half. In IPL 2022 Eliminator, Patidar scored an impressive century against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Josh Hazlewood- RCB

Josh Hazlewood, the Australian fast bowler, might not play in IPL 2023 due to his Achilles tendonitis. He didn’t play the first two Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests and went back home, missing the entire series against India.
