Since the tournament’s inception in 2008, CSK have experienced some of the greatest joys, but they have also experienced some low points. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been one of the most successful teams.

The Yellow brigade has won the championship four times and will be hoping for a fifth under legendary captain MS Dhoni, who could be retiring from the game this year, as some former players have predicted.

In the inaugural league match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), which Rajasthan also won, Chennai experienced one of its worst collapses, sparked by former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir.

During an interview with Sports Yaari, Tanvir described the experience as a “lifetime memory.” It sure is a once-in-a-lifetime performance.

Former Pakistan bowler, Sohail Tanvir recalls his 6/14 spell in the IPL and calls it a once-in-a-lifetime moment

Tanvir’s 6/14 was the best bowling performance in IPL for a decade

“Of course, my record of 6/14 against Chennai, remained a record for the subsequent 11-12 seasons. It was a champion presentation and even today when I meet Indian fans and when they discuss IPL, they recall the spell. That spell is a lifetime memory for me,” the former Pakistan fast bowler said.

CSK were bowled out for 109 in 19 overs, led by former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir, who took figures of 6/14 in 4 overs. It stayed as the best-ever bowling figure in T20 for a long time.

He started the game by dismissing Stephen Fleming and Parthiv Patel in the first over itself. In his subsequent over, he got rid of Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, and in his subsequent spell, he got rid of Albie Morkel, Muthiah Muralidaran, and Makhaya Ntini.

Rajasthan responded by chasing down the paltry 110-run target in 14.2 overs and winning the match by 8 wickets.

Tanvir played a crucial role in Rajasthan’s initial success. Sohail Tanvir was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker at the time, with a 6.46 economy and 22 scalps to his name. Rajasthan Royals went on to lift the trophy that year, being the inaugural champions.

Alzarri Joseph broke the record in 2019

Tanvir held onto his record for more than a decade before West Indian quick Alzarri Joseph, who was playing for the Mumbai Indians at the time, broke it in 2019. The pacer set a record against Sunrisers Hyderabad by taking 6/12 wickets, including a maiden, in 3.4 overs.

As Mumbai were able to defend a paltry 137-run target, his efforts stunned the fans. Vijay Shankar followed after Alzarri Joseph took David Warner’s wicket. He then caught and bowled Rashid Khan to dismiss him after cleaning up Deepak Hooda.

Joseph’s devastation did not end there; he also caught and bowled Bhuvneshwar Kumar to dismiss Siddharth Kaul and then cleaned up Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Mumbai defeated Hyderabad for 96 in 17.4 overs thanks to his efforts.

Sohail Tanvir was one of the few Pakistan cricketers to play in the IPL. In the current seasons of IPL, Pakistani cricketers are not involved in IPL due to the military altercation between the two countries.
