Jordan, the son of Deloris (née Peoples), a bank employee, and James R. Jordan Sr., an equipment supervisor, was born at Cumberland Hospital in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York City, on February 17, 1963. He relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, with his family in 1968. Basketball, baseball, and football were some of Jordan’s standout sports while he was a student at Wilmington’s Emsley A. Laney High School. He tried out for the basketball varsity squad during his sophomore year, but at 5 feet, 11 inches (1.80 m), it was decided he was too short to compete at that level.
