Why Losing Mattia Binotto Might Hurt Ferrari in the Days to Come

Ferrari might be in a bit of trouble following the resignation of Mattia Binotto. With the team principal gone, the team might have to face some dire consequences in the following seasons.

The innumerable strategy errors and reliability problems that haunted Ferrari during the 2022 season made sure that Mattia Binotto was an easy target for the critics. However, it must be noted that it was due to Binotto himself that Ferrari returned to the front of the field in the first place.

The 2022 season has proven to be a huge learning experience for Ferrari. The season has made them realize that to be a championship contender, one must not even slip up for a bit. Given all of this, a new leadership coming in to guide the team might mean that Ferrari will lose out on a crucial time during the 2023 season trying to find their direction as a team.

Mattia Binotto was an engineer who was well adept in the technical aspect of the sport. Be it engines, or the car as a whole, Binotto was a master of it all. He was also quite adept at handling the political machinery that goes on at Formula 1. He took care of it all as the team principal of the oldest team in the Formula 1 grid.

Currently, Ferrari is without any leadership. They have lost a team principal who was probably the best amongst his colleagues in terms of understanding the F1 car and having the vision to design a race-winning package.

Mattia Binotto had immense knowledge about the ins and outs of the whole team at Maranello. He would have been a critical part of Ferrari’s plan to recover lost ground and take the fight to Red Bull in the 2023 season.

Mattia Binotto was a very valuable asset for Ferrari

With the departure of Binotto, Ferrari lacks the insight and guidance that it will need for the 2023 season. Any new team boss who will come in will take quite a lot of time to get up to speed with the philosophy of the team.

And even besides the philosophy, it will take time to come to terms with the design direction, structure of the team, and various other teams.

The risk stands that by the time the new team principal will be up to speed with the functioning of the team, the championship maybe already lost. Added to that, if the new principal gets a few calls wrong during the start of next season, Ferrari might head down a path of no return in terms of car design. This is because the cost cap will offer them no chance to rectify their errors.

Another aspect that Mattia Binotto had mastered was the politics at Maranello. He was part of the Ferrari team since 1995. Binotto started out as an engineer in the engine department and then worked his way up the ranks.

He experienced the whole system and even after stepping up to the topmost platform of the team, had a detailed understanding of how everything worked below him.

Ferrari owes a lot to Mattia Binotto, and it is quite evident why the mood at Maranello might be on the lower side for a few days now. It won’t be surprising if a few more resignations are handed in in the days to come.
