‘We’re still waiting’: During an IPL game, Sunil Gavaskar inquires about the Kohinoor diamond with British announcer Alan Wilkins

Sunil Gavaskar is one of the best batters India has ever produced. The cricket legend is also a respected figure in the commentary box. The 72-year-old is loved by the masses for his good sense of humor in his punditry.

Gavaskar recently had a remarkable conversation with fellow British pundit Alan Wilkins. This was during his recent appearance in Match 20 of the IPL 2022 between RR and LSG. The Royals won the tightly contested match by a thrilling margin of 3 runs.

The incident transpired in the 7th over of the RR innings. In a fun conversation, both commentators were debating why the Marine Drive was referred to as the Queen’s necklace.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar poked at Wilkins during the conversation. He reminded him that India is still waiting for the Kohinoor diamond to be returned to them. Brits are said to have stolen the diamond in the 19th century.

“We’re still waiting for the Kohinoor Diamond,” Gavaskar said. To which Wilkins said, laughing, “I wonder when that is coming.” Moreover, Gavaskar inquired with Wilkins as to whether he had any influence on the current British administration. He joked with him to persuade them to return the diamond.

In a series of events, a video tweet of their conversation went viral. However, the person who posted it mistook Alan Wilkins for England spinner Graeme Swann. Swann is also a part of the IPL 2022 Star Sports panel.

Swann responded to the tweet by posting a photo with Rohan Gavaskar, Sunil Gavaskar’s son. Furthermore, he went on to write, “Er… “I’m with Gavaskar’s other mate.” Rohan, like Swann, is a pundit for the ongoing season of the IPL and they both stay at the same hotel.

Following the tweet, several users were being critical of Sunil Gavaskar. Some of them asked him to stick to his commentary job. Meanwhile, others praised him for bringing the matter back into the spotlight.
