US Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev stuns Novak Djokovic to claim maiden Grand Slam title

US Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev stunned the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday as he beat the World No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Medvedev claimed his first tennis Grand Slam title and snatched a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam win from Djokovic in doing so.

Djokovic’s dreams of sweeping all four major tournaments namely the Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open and the US Open were shattered by the Russian as he thrashed the Serb, winning the first three sets in a row.

Medvedev’s win over Djokovic concluded an extremely eventful US Open with 18-year-old Emma Raducanu winning the Women’s Singles event. The 25-year-old Russian took the lead in the first two sets. Known for his comebacks, Novak Djokovic was still in the game.

However, Medvedev’s determination was on show as he broke Djokovic in the first game of the third set. He sailed to victory as he shattered Djokovic’s dreams.

Medvedev put a halt to the comeback king’s Grand Slam run

Novak Djokovic was the fan favourite coming in the event. However, Medvedev was not ready to let go. His counters as well as his ferocious serve shocked everyone including the Serbian World No. 1.

Medvedev was determined to stop Djokovic from returning too many serves, as he tested Novak’s game. The Serbian, a master of sidewise baseline play was unable to answer the questions Medvedev’s shots posed.

The competition appeared to be an easy one for the Serb as both giants, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were unable to grace the tournament hailing to previous injuries. Novak had an easy run at beating the upcoming players, including Medvedev in Australia.

However, the matchup did not quite go to the plan as Novak Djokovic wept after an emotional end to the tournament.

Is the new generation ready to take on the ‘Golden Generation’?

The challenge, which Daniil came out on top of, is quite evident as the years go by. As Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic try to go for more glory, they face the growing contenders’ challenge.

The recent run of events has given enough proof that the next generation is ready to take the battle to the greats. Emma Raducanu, an unseeded 18-year-old won the Women’s singles as she defeated 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez in the finals.

Fernandez became one of the first to take forward the next generation’s agenda. As she defeated two former champions on her road to the finals. Fernandez defeated Naomi Osaka, a favourite to win and the defending champion in the third round.

Medvedev praised Djokovic after the match as he called the Serbian better than Nadal and Federer. As a result, the crowd were shocked during the 25-year-old’s speech.
