Angelo Mathews informs SLC of his retirement ahead of India series

Sri Lankan cricket has already hit the rock bottom. Things are turning from bad to worse. As things stand, it seems there is literally zero hope for survival. The board members are well aware of the pathetic situation.

If they are really serious about taking Sri Lanka Cricket forward and compete at the highest level, they still have a lot of work to do. The process doesn’t take a day or two but calls for patience and perseverance.

It’s time for Sri Lanka to address the problems before it’s too late. Earlier, they lost to England in the ODI and T20I series. It’s more painful for Sri Lankan supporters to see their team not giving it all, let alone winning a match.

England inflicted a 3-0 clean sweep on Sri Lanka in the T20I series. It was almost the same case in the ODI series where England were on the brink of completing yet another whitewash.

Needless to say, the rain gods showed mercy on the Sri Lankan team. The rains played spoilsport and as a result, the third ODI was abandoned. Now, the Sri Lankans have another major challenge up ahead at home.

India’s second-string team led by Shikhar Dhawan have already arrived in Sri Lanka. They have also completed their mandatory quarantine procedure and are currently gearing up for the challenge.

More bad news for Sri Lanka

In a shocking development, veteran Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has reportedly informed Sri Lanka Cricket of his retirement from international cricket. The all-rounder has hinted to the board regarding the same and will come with his last decision in the forthcoming weeks.

Meanwhile, a report published in newswire added that: “according to SLC sources, Angelo Mathews (34) has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that he is currently discussing the matter and will inform his decision in the upcoming weeks.”

The 34-year-old cricketer was not available during the recently-concluded team’s tour of England. He made himself unavailable due to paternity leave. He and his wife Heshani are expecting their third child.

The strict selection policy of SLC has seen experienced players making way for youngsters. This decision was taken considering the 2023 World Cup. In the wake of this new policy, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chamdimal have been sidelined.

Thisara Perera announced an early retirement from international cricket and perhaps the same has also induced Mathews who is also thinking over his retirement plans. India’s tour of Sri Lanka begins with ODI series, with the first ODI scheduled on July 13.
