Three players Arsenal should sign from the Championship this summer

Arsenal are enduring one of the worst Premier League season in their history. The club is languishing ninth in the league table and nine points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

They suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. That was their 12th league loss of the season, with eight games still remaining. They have accumulated just 42 points in 30 games, their worst return at this stage in Premier League history.

Getting European football next season from the league position is now highly unlikely. Their only hope of playing European football next season is by winning the Europa League. But they face a tricky tie against Slavia Prague, a team who has already eliminated heavyweights like Rangers and Leicester City this season.

Manager Mikel Arteta knows he needs new signings to improve his team in order to move up the table and challenge for titles next season.

Arsenal need new signings:

The Gunners have spent big in recent transfer windows. The likes of Nicolas Pepe, Gabriel, and Thomas Partey all joined the club for a hefty sum. And they have to go big again this summer to land their targets, especially if they miss out on European football.

But the North London’s club main stumbling block is that they will have limited funds to spend. They will have to sell some players to add to their transfer budget.

Arsenal’s targets like Houssem Aouar will again cost the club huge money. They are open for a permanent signing of Martin Odegaard. But then again, his parent club Real Madrid will ask for upwards of £40 million for his signature. The same goes for another Los Blancos loanee Dani Ceballos.

Arteta will have to make some shrewd signings to rebuild his agEing and underperforming squad. And Championship is the best place to make savvy signings.

Championship players that Arsenal can sign:

The first player Arteta should look to sign is Derby County’s Jason Knight. The Gunners are very unstable in midfield and should be looking to improve that position. Knight is an all-round midfielder, who can tackle well with great defensive and offensive awareness. The 20-year-old is an excellent dribbler as well, breaking the defensive lines and pushes forward with ease. Given his very young age, he will only get better from here.

Arsenal were recently linked with Inter Milan’s Achraf Hakimi. But the right-back will again cost more than what Arsenal can afford. One alternative can be Porto’s right-back Tomas Esteves, who is on-loan at Reading in the Championship. The 18-year-old is pretty quick and can run down the right-flank. Esteves boasts excellent close control and technical ability and is pretty solid defensively as well.

The future of Alexandre Lacazette is still unclear in the Emirates. And he is 30-year-old and past his best days. Arsenal need someone who can play second fiddle to captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and has room to improve.

One such player can be Blackburn Rovers Adam Armstrong. The 24-year-old is at the right age and is already a Championship-proven striker. He has scored 19 goals and three assists this season in the league. And with only one year left on his contract, he will be available for a cut price. Arsenal should be all over this deal.
