Chelsea academy star in contention to become part of the first team

When Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 he had a vision for the club. In the short term, he wanted to spend big money and sign world-class talents. While in the long run, he wanted Chelsea to produce world-class talents from their academy itself. That’s why alongside signing big players for the first team he also invested heavily in the youth team setup.

However, this could be possible as most of the managers were not willing to give these young players a chance. Abramovich hardly had any patience and he would not hesitate to sack managers. Thus the managers in fear of their jobs kept on playing first-team players and they were hesitant to give chances to young players.

Thus Abramovich’s ambition of producing players from the academy was far from a reality. Chelsea Academy was producing good players and most of them were sent out of loans. But last season, Lampard decided to give young players a chance. He was also forced to do so, given that the Blues were under a transfer ban.

However, his decision has been fantastic for young Chelsea players. The likes of Recce James, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Callum Hudson Odoi have become part of the first-team squad. Chelsea fans also love to see one of their local boys being part of the first-team squad. Many had hoped that many more other players can get into the first team.

The next Chelsea academy star into the first team

According to The Athletic, Marc Guehi is one such player who could be a part of the first team. Currently, he is on loan at Swansea and he did very well with Swansea third in the table. The youngster has progressed very well at the club and since signing for them in January he has made 27 appearances for the Welsh club.

The Swans are also said to be very keen on signing him permanently. He is already playing for them, so if they sign him, he won’t take time to settle at the club. He can also help in the next season either to get a promotion or to stay in the Premier League. Though there is no clause in his loan deal as per Swansea can sign permanently. Thus they will have to try and negotiate with the Blues.

But there is some bad for the Championship side. The same report from The Athletic also states that Chelsea is seriously considering to be the part of their squad for the first team next season. Frank Lampard alongside his trusted No.2 Jordy Morris has been keeping tabs on his progress during his loan spell away from the club.

Considering how Chelsea has reacted to Swansea’s interest in signing him permanently it indicates the Blues value his talent. Perhaps for the time being his future is at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard could give him a chance like he has done with his fellow academy graduates and then decide upon his future.

The risk for Marc Guehi

Though the likes of James and Mount are in the first team, Fikayo Tomori is one such player who has been left out. He has played well whenever he has been given chances. The 22 years old was a forced substitution against Liverpool after an Andreas Christensen red card. Though the Blues lost the game 2-0, Tomori was praised for his second-half display.

There is no doubt that the Englishman is very talented. Last season against Liverpool he managed to pocket Mo Salah as well. Despite all of this he hasn’t been given fair chances by Frank Lampard while the likes of Christensen and Rudiger despite making mistakes after mistakes are being given chances. It is likely that he will leave the club in January.

The concern for Marc Guehi would be that he should not be in the same position as Tomori. Though what is exactly happening with Tomori behind the scenes is not known on the face of it, Lampards seems to be unfair to him. But at the same time, this could also be a fantastic opportunity for the youngster to establish himself in the first team.

Thiago Silva won’t be at the club for long while the future of Rudiger is also up for debate. Andreas Christensen hasn’t been good enough. This only leaves Zouma as his competitor and if he performs well he could very well establish himself in the first team.
