Chelsea could miss their key player against Saints this weekend

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea might miss their new star signing against Southampton this weekend. The Blues are ready to host the Saints this Saturday at Stamford Bridge. However, Londoners are expected to miss their star defender, who recently opened his account for Chelsea. Lampard wants to keep the winning momentum going.

Chelsea will contest against Southampton after the international break. Chelsea had a good weekend before the break-in their home. Lampard saw his side winning comfortably with a 4-0 scoreline against the Villains. Aston Villa couldn’t find a consolation goal as well against the brick-wall defense. The former Blues legend will be rooting to get to the top four after huge spending this summer.

The Londoners spent around €272million this summer transfer window just behind Manchester City with €156.8million. Chelsea signed 7 players this window, while City has signed one player less in comparison with Chelsea. However, Chelsea managed to sign some big names, which has been their top priorities before the start of the window. Likes of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech were on the radar of many top-flight clubs.

Although, Chelsea broke their bank to sign all of their targets this window. Lampard managed to land stars from Bundesliga likes of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. Both of them were top players for their respective clubs in Germany. Former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Hakim Ziyech is still recovering from his injury, which he picked up with Ajax. Apart from forwarding signings, Chelsea completed some defensive signings as well.

Former AC Milan and Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva is one of their new defensive signings this summer. Malang Saar and long-time target Ben Chilwell did sign in favor of Chelsea. Former Leicester City full-back was Chelsea’s top target this summer and they did sign him as well.

£50million-rated full-back’s injury concerns

Ben Chilwell arrived at Stamford Bridge for a huge fee just for his goal-scoring abilities. The English international proved his worth last week bus scoring his first goal for the Blues against Aston Villa. Although, the full-back didn’t show any discomfort during the game last week. The left-back has signed a contract with the Blues for five-years.

Chilwell got his call-up from Gareth Southgate after his impressive performance last week. The Three Lions did defeat Belgium and Wales during the international break this weekend. However, Ben Chilwell didn’t feature in both the games for the English National side. This also raised questions amongst the fans about Chilwell’s injury.

English National side manager Gareth Southgate explained Ben Chilwell’s fitness form. Speaking after the game he said: “Ben reported to the hotel today. He did a training session on his own. We’ve just got to assess where he’s at because he hasn’t been able to train through the week. So, there’s a little bit of assessment needed over the next couple of days but he is with the group now.

Three Lions will also face Denmark on Thursday and Chelsea will host Saints on Saturday. With this schedule, Chelsea fans are concerned over Ben Chilwell’s injury. Southgate added that, “Ben reported to the hotel today. He did a training session on his own.” Although, Chelsea has two back-ups for the left-back position. They have Emerson and Marcos Alonso on the squad, who can make an impact. However, Chilwell might recover within the time period.

Alonso and Emerson situation at Chelsea

Ben Chilwell’s arrival has diminished Emerson and Alonso’s chances in the starting eleven for Chelsea. Former Leicester City left-back had an impressive debut for the Londoners in the Premier League. Chilwell scored a goal and also grabbed an assist to his name. It would obviously be his dream to start in Premier League as a Chelsea player.

However, Chilwell already made his debut in the EFL Cup for the Blues alongside Thiago Silva. He has made a total of two appearances in the Carabao Cup and has an assist. He could well be the future star for Chelsea on the left side of the field. As a result, Alonso and Emerson’s places are in contention now.

Lampard considers Emerson as a backup option for the new left-back. While Alonso’s role in the Blues squad is still a big question mark. He was expected to leave for Inter Milan to reunite with Antonio Conte. However, the deal didn’t happen with the deadline over already. However, Lampard has played Alonso in three Premier League games this season. Ben Chilwell is expected to be back in the side by Saturday with complete fitness.
