Chelsea left-back ‘will stay’ despite arrival of Ben Chilwell

Chelsea are on the brink of confirming a deal to sign Leicester City left-back, Ben Chilwell.

Lampard had identified his plans to give the Spanish another chance in the new campaign with the fullback facing criticism for his display on the pitch. Although, Alonso sits for Chelsea perfectly with the wing-back system that Frank proposes in certain games.

This means Emerson Palmieri will face the ax from his manager according to the reliable Sky Italy reporter Angelo Mangiante. He is looked at the reason for change rather than Alonso with Inter Milan keeping tabs on him. It will free up space for Chilwell to arrive without any competition for his place.

According to multiple reports in England, the 23-year-old is set to go for medical in a couple of days ahead of his £50M switch from Leicester. Chelsea will surely get someone to bolster their backline that has been struggling to keep out goals. Chilwell will also resolve the deep-lying issue in his position at the club.

Aside from Chilwell’s deal, the Londoners are keen to bring in Thiago Silva from PSG and Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. Both signings are set to be secured as early as the next week. Chelsea are making the most out of this summer window after facing an entire season transfer ban last time.

Chance for Alonso

Alonso still fits in Lampard’s plan for his caliber in playing as a wing-back role. Despite lacking the necessary pace, Alonso still produces in a back three system. The former Fiorentina player has also played the most minutes than Emerson and quite rightly so.

Emerson is a player that likes to make repeated overlapping runs but simultaneously forgets his defensive duties. Not because he leaves space behind but his marking from a set-piece is troubling. The 26-year-old doesn’t know simply who makes a run behind him. As a case, he will be shown the exit door.

It is why Alonso is staying. He is fixed to his system of playing. But one troubling is that Chilwell’s arrival will restrict his game minutes. It will allow Lampard to use a more natural formation to aid their new attack. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech will surely use their role massively and it is hereby necessary for Chelsea to start with a four-man backline.

The role for Alonso will be to warm the bench, only getting calls to replace Chilwell in less competitive fixtures or less serious club games. Something that he needs to hang onto if he’s to stay with the club. He’s been an integral part of Conte’s Chelsea but never carried the same reputation since then.

However, he provides an option for Plan B if the initial approach turns failure. Alonso brings in a lot of stability in the wing-back role. He holds his position well and likes to weep in crosses with also being good in possession. Plus, he brings in a decent goal threat from left. His height also helps him in aerial challenges.

These sets of attributes will help Lampard evaluate his decision. Chilwell is a witty player with proactive attacking sense but he lacks certain parts in his game that Alonso fills up nicely. So, Lampard will keep a good option in hand rather than selling him.

Twelfth Man opinion

Marcos Alonso has still something to offer to the club. He may be not the perfect player for his position but does bring quality. He has also been a true servant to the club, helping them in ups and downs. Ben Chilwell’s transfer may not help him out with game minutes but he serves as an additional option to Frank.

Emerson is on the receiving end of changes at the club and it gives Alonso more breathing air to keep his place. The 29 year old is better than his Italian counterpart by creating more impact on the pitch. Moreover, he will to wish to be a part of an exciting squad in build to make the most of his opportunities if available.
