Chelsea to break the bank for this Barcelona superstar

Things are not looking rosy at Chelsea currently and Roman Abramovich is turning to the transfer market once again pour some life back into Stamford Bridge.

If there is one thing we have learnt for the past, Chelsea football club is willing to spend cash. Loads of it. Now, in the face of adversity, Mr.Abramovich will go back to the same mantra. With Gonzalo Higuain reportedly signed and sealed, there might be further additions to the squad. The Blues look to Catalunya for some inspiration. And the name being branded around is no stranger to the Premier League.

Coutinho: Red to Blue

Chelsea are the latest Premier League side to join the race for the signature of Philippe Coutinho. Barcelona paid £142million for Coutinho last January and he thrived in Spain initially. But now he is struggling to hold down a place in Ernesto Valverde’s starting line-up. Barca are believed to be willing to sell Coutinho to fund a potential reunion for Neymar from PSG. This also helps them in abiding by the Financial Fair Play rules.

Chelsea have been quoted around £100 million for Coutinho and they haven’t baulked at the fee. They are ready to rival United with their attempts to return him to the Premier League. The player is willing to make things work in Spain. But is believed to be open to a move in the summer should things fail to improve. The Blues have asked Barcelona to keep them in touch with any plans they have to offload former Liverpool star.

Klopp on a potential Coutinho return

Jurgen Klopp was earlier quizzed about Coutinho returning to Anfield. But he ruled out making a move for Coutinho when speaking yesterday. “That is something I don’t want to talk about. I would not say it is a potential transfer or a likely one,” Klopp said.“Nothing to say. Whatever I say would open more stories and there is no story. Phil is at Barcelona and as I know he fits really well and everything is fine.”

Author’s take

Chelsea looking to Coutinho is a bad idea. Coutinho can play on the left wing or in the midfield. But the left wing is already occupied by the mercurial Hazard and the midfield is filled with options like Kante, Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Moreover, the £100m would be better utilised by improving positions like the right wing, left back and even the central defence. Barcelona should keep hold of the Brazilian unless they can recover the money they initially invested in him.
