Liverpool got out of their weekend fixture with 3 points… but only just. In a performance akin to last season, no one saw the thriller coming!
A 4-3 comeback win against the bogey team is exactly the stuff to further boost confidence around Anfield that this might just be their year. This might just be the year that Liverpool end their 29 year-long title drought. However, if the dream is to come to fruition that Jurgen Klopp requires all hands on deck. Especially during this crucial period of the season when injuries are piling up for the Reds. No one signifies that approach more than the resident smiling Brazilian, Roberto Firmino.
The Liverpool No.9’s usual unselfish displays already have fans drooling over his abilities. But what he did in the last 5 minutes of that topsy-turvy game really drove home his character and why he such an important player for the club and the manager.
Reds were down to 10 men after their starting right-back, tormented all game by Wilfried Zaha, had been given his marching order. Fabinho was already taken off due to slight knock and with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez’s already enforced absence, there was no one to fill up the right-back spot. Up stepped Roberto Firmino. The man who was a constant menace in the final third was now defending his own goal. Over the course of the game, he had gone playing as a No. 10 to a No. 8 and now a No.2
Indeed, it was just 5 minutes but that’s long enough to showcase his commitment to the cause. He did not get hailed for the fact after the match but the Twitterati did not forget. Here are some tweets of Liverpool fans going gaga over Firmino:
When someone writes a book about our title winning season, hope they include a few pages on our game with Palace..How Fabinho limped off and Firmino had to deputize in midfield and switched to right back when Milner was sent off, Gerrard Instanbul esque grit..#LFC #LIVCRY #YNWA

| Roberto Firmino Played yesterday’s game starting in a false 9 role, he then rotated to the wings, dropped back into a CDM role with henderson, then finished the game in right back after Milner got sent off. He doesn’t get enough credit. #lfc pic.twitter.com/AxaFqxDAtP
