Arsenal to make January move for African star

The Gunners have to replace the injured Danny Welbeck, and will do well to look at this particular player.

Arsenal has always enjoyed a fanatic fanbase in in Africa and Asia, for that is a given considering they one of the most popular teams in the world. Hence it makes sense that players from these continents grow up dreaming one day appearing in the iconic reds of the the Gunners.

And history has shown that the London Club has had some success with imports from these continents, with Lauren and Alex Song being some of the most recent players to represent the record FA Cup winners. Both hailed from Cameroon, and this country could just give the club another player when it most needs one.

This Cameroonian wants to join Arsenal and may end up being a gamble worth taking, considering Welbeck is probably out for the rest of the season, and with his contract expiring in the summer anyway, could need to be replaced.

The striker in question is Christian Bassogog, he of Chinese Super League side Henan Jianye fame, and one who has netted an acceptable 16 goals in 51 games, most of which have come from the wing.

Many readers may not have heard of him, but he won the AFCON 2017 Most Valuable Player after leading Cameroon to the title, post which he was snapped up by Henan Jianye from Danish side Aab for a record fee in that country.

And Bassogog himself revealed to Goal that he really wants to play for Unai Emery’s side.

“Yes, it’s still a dream for me to come back to Europe, I would like to play in the biggest league in the world, in the Premier League. My favourite club since I was very small is Arsenal. I like playing with the ball and this club suits me. When I was a child, Thierry Henry was a model for me. It’s someone who impressed me a lot.”

Arsenal could really do with another striker come January, and it makes all kinds of sense to pursue Bassogog if he is available for a reasonable fee. Having adequate back-up up front can often be the difference between winning and losing games, and by extension trophies, so it would be wise for Arsenal to make sure to get a replacement, and perhaps an upgrade, for the crocked Welbeck.
