Chelsea shocked the footballing universe when they got the better of Guardiola’s Manchester City at Stamford Bridge last Sunday
N’golo Kante and David Luiz scored one each to help the Blues emerge victorious against the Cityzens. The victory lifted Chelsea into the 4th spot with 34 points from 16 games. They are, however, considerably behind leaders Man city who have 44 points so far. but have played one more game. Second-placed Liverpool have 42 points to their name and Tottenham have 39, having played one game more.
The Blues, however, prior to the city game, seemed to have lost momentum as they had lost to Tottenham and Wolverhampton Wanderers in quick succession. Former Manchester united and England star Paul Ince feels that Chelsea will miss out on a Champions League spot along with Manchester united. he said,
“It’s a tough one because everyone would say City [will win the title]. I’m going to say City because even against Chelsea they were so dominant in the first half, I just think they’ve got no [Sergio] Aguero and no [Kevin] De Bruyne at the moment and they’re still dominating teams. ‘So I think City will do it and Liverpool second – I’d like to say Liverpool first to be fair but I think they’ll finish second.
Then I think Tottenham and then Arsenal, I think. I don’t think Chelsea score enough goals. They’re so reliant on [Eden] Hazard and he’s gone off the boil a little bit. ‘[Olivier] Giroud doesn’t score enough goals for me and [Alvaro] Morata is a bit of a sulker, doesn’t really run around, doesn’t want to move. They do lack goals.”
Paul Ince does make a very valid point that Chelsea seem to be over-dependent on Eden Hazard and both of their strikers have failed to deliver on a consistent basis. It wouldn’t really be surprising if Chelsea go on and sign a striker in the winter transfer window to fix this.
