Chelsea confident of signing Premier League star striker

Chelsea are going through a lean patch after making an incredible start under Sarri and the club look to arrest the downfall by investing in January.

“I am not able to give him confidence. I hope for him that in the future I can try to help him, but the confidence can come only with goals.” This was what Maurizio Sarri had to say regarding Morata’s poor form in Chelsea blue.

The Spaniard has struggled to find his feet at Stamford Bridge. This has prompted the Italian to start Giroud and even Hazard up front. Now the club looks to bring in an established Premier League striker as an alternative.

Callum Wilson, the answer to Chelsea’s problems?

Express Sport understands that fourth-place Chelsea are confident of completing a deal to get Wilson on board in January. The club will look to tie up a £30m deal with Bournemouth to bring in the England international. The Cherries, however, would desperate to hold on to the striker. They would look to squeeze out as much money as possible if a transfer became imminent.

The move would also increase the club’s British core, ahead of a new quota which will be introduced by the Premier League next season. The report points out that Chelsea are currently at risk of losing six homegrown players from their first team.

Gary Cahill, Cesc Fabregas, Danny Drinkwater, Andreas Christensen, Victor Moses and Rob Green have all been tipped to leave Stamford Bridge and if ignored, it would risk them breaching the new guidelines.

Eddie Howe’s comments on the speculation

Eddie Howe, however, has made his intentions clear on keeping his star man at the club past the January window.“Callum is focusing on his football and we are not anticipating losing any players in January and we don’t want to,” Howe said.“He seems very happy, he has a spring in his step. He is buzzing around the training ground and there is a very good feel about him.”

And Howe said the £3m Bournemouth originally paid Coventry for him reflects great business.“The fee at the time was discussed as a lot of money but when you compare it to fees now it looks a snip, doesn’t it?” he concluded.

Author’s take

Chelsea bringing in Wilson might not be good for both parties. Instead, Chelsea should be able to manage with Morata, Giroud and Hazard and then bring in Timo Werner next summer.

Werner is the future and the numbers back the claim. He takes 4.2 shots per game in the box. Lewandowski, who is regarded as one of the best and also plays in the same league take 2.2 only. Only the incredible Cristiano Ronaldo and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic take more shots in the box than the young German.

His xG and xA combined is 0.9, which is incredible considering RB Leipzig are not at the height of their powers. Werner is ready to make the next step and playing under Sarri with the likes of Hazard and Jorginho would improve his numbers. The fact that he is yet to hit his peak is a scary prospect.
