Person who sabotaged Jose Mourinho signing Antoine Griezmann revealed!

Going into his second season with Manchester United, Jose Mourinho had made some significant signing which included the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Eric Bailly.

Despite finishing his first season with United at sixth position in the Premier League, EFL Cup and Europa League triumph saved Jose Mourinho from getting sacked immediately. Shortly after that, he lured Ed Woodward into splashing some heavy sums on Romelu Lukaku and Eric Bailly.

There were plenty of rumors which suggested United were trying to sign Atletico Madrid’s talisman Antoine Griezmann, but the transfer ban imposed on them stood as a barrier. The one-year transfer ban was withheld by the court of arbitration despite various petitions filed against it.

As reports in The Express suggest, there were various reasons behind Griezmann not ending up at the Theater of Dreams and Ed Woodward’s disinterest was also playing a big part. While a few speculations suggested the price was too high, some others termed it Griezmann’s willingness to remain in Spain which kept him away from the Premier League.

In the last few seasons, specifically under Jose Mourinho’s reign as Manchester United boss, Ed Woodward made some significant signings. The likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku came into the club and ensured their move was buzzing all over the world.

Although only Zlatan managed to cope with the fans’ expectations, Woodward has done a pretty decent job in luring these big players in the first place. Unfortunately, he failed to replicate the same in Griezmann’s case, who pulled off a mind-boggling individual performance for France in the 2018 World Cup.

The Frenchman would’ve been a perfect replacement for Wayne Rooney, but destiny had something else written for both parties. United still are linked with the player, but ever so tentatively. In the recent transfer windows, only Barcelona came very close to signing the 27-year-old.

AUTHOR’S TAKE

It really could’ve been difficult for Woodward to sign someone like Griezmann, who is determined to staying loyal with his club. InAtletico’s meteoric rise in recent years, the Frenchman had a huge role to play and it will be very surprising to see him move to another club in the coming two seasons.
