Jose Mourinho admits ‘the moment is not sweet’ for one of his favourites

Romelu Lukaku has gone without scoring a goal for Manchester United since more than a month. The Belgian forward’s last goal came on September 15. Jose Mourinho has now given a verdict.

Manchester United were dominated and well beaten by Juventus on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils failed to convert their chances and endured a barren night in front of goal where Romelu Lukaku was the focus of attention yet again. The Belgium international has not scored in the last eight matches for his country now and that’s a cause of real concern.

Jose Mourinho has now spoken about the former Everton forward. “Yeah,” Mourinho replied when asked if he was concerned by Lukaku’s impotence. “No critics at all, a complete understanding the player is a fantastic professional that wants to give everything for the team but I have to agree his moment is not sweet. Not just with the goals that he is not scoring but also in his confidence, in his movement, in his touch, he is not linking the game well with the team. But he’s our striker and a good striker and a striker we believe in.”

“Could I play Rashford there? But then I don’t have a winger because in this moment we are in this difficult situation. He (Lukaku) is a hard-working guy, is a good professional, but one day the goal will arrive and the confidence will be back.”

“We play against one of the biggest really biggest candidates to win the Champions League and we did the possible we could to get the different result,” Mourinho said of United’s third Old Trafford defeat this term. “Especially because of the way we played in the second half.

Author’s Take

With what Mourinho has said, it is clear that he is not angry or livid with Romelu Lukaku. The former Chelsea boss is aware that the striker is just going through a rough patch despite doing well on international duty. Maybe even the manager is aware that his forward is underperforming due to the poor service coming his way, which indirectly signals at United’s lack of transfer business.
