The Blaugrana goalkeeper isn’t finding too many opportunities with the Catalans, but the Liverpool manager is interested in bringing him to Merseyside
Barcelona’s second-choice Goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen may be nearing an exit. The Dutch international has found life hard in Catalonia and seen chances coming few and far between. Reports now emerge that Liverpool might be his next destination as Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of him.
The German gaffer isn’t satisfied with the goalkeeping options available to him, as neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius have impressed in goal this season. Reinforcements seem imperative, and Klopp may have identified an able net anchor in the Dutchman.
Cillessen is used only as a cup-game player, moreover only in the Copa Del Rey games. Ter Stegan continues to rule the roost in both, the league and Europe. This has seen the former Ajax netminder feature in only 9 games thus far all season, just one less than what he managed to do last time.
But with Mignolet supposedly on his way out of the Kop and Karius yet to prove his mettle, Klopp finds Cillessen as the right man between the sticks. Liverpool are also said to plot a bid in the summer.
Further developments are expected in the coming months as the Reds purportedly aren’t the only club in the race to sign him.
Cillessen is a terrific goalkeeper and can prove to be an upgrade in the nets from the options that Liverpool already have. A player like him deserves more gametime to fully deliver on the promise with which Barcelona bought him in 2016. Liverpool can certainly provide that. And a lot more.
