Blow for Real Madrid as their top Karim Benzema replacement is denied a move away

With their infamous BBC trio struggling to cope up with the La Liga, Real Madrid has created a shortlist, but it looks like their top summer target will not be allowed to leave.

To say that Karim Benzema has struggled this season for Real Madrid would be an absolute understatement. The Frenchman has struggled in front of goal this season, scoring only four in his 19 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid.  That’s exactly why both Florentino Perez and manager Zinedine Zidane have created a shortlist of replacements to replace the Frenchman.

The list includes the likes of Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi, Tottenham’s Harry Kane, and of course the forever linked Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international has been in incredible form for the Bavarians and already has 26 goals so far has made only 26 appearances in the Bundesliga.

However, with the prolific Pole recently turning to super-agent Pini Zahavi, many believe that this could be Robert Lewandowski’s signal that he’s getting ready for a move away. This only means that Real Madrid will have to shell out an incredible sum for the Poland striker. However, Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes has gone on to dissipate any transfer rumors about the star striker.

The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen manager, who took over after Carlo Ancelotti was fired for his third spell at Bayern Munich, won the Champions League both with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich among other trophies, before retiring in 2013. And speaking ahead of the Bavarian’s clash against Sevilla in the Champions League, Heynckes went on to say “[Chairman] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already said it: with Robert, Real Madrid have no chance at all. Knowing Hoeness and Rummenigge as I do, I would give Real Madrid no chance of signing Lewandowski for next year.”

But despite Jupp Heynckes interview, earlier in March Bayern Munich legend Givoane Elber had a lot to say about Lewandowski’s potential move to Real Madrid. “Everyone wants to have such a player in their team. If they have the opportunity to get Lewandowski away from Bayern, they will do their best to do it.  But Bayern has been warned and Lewandowski feels very settled with his family in Munich. He knows that he has everything at Bayern. I hope and expect that he stays with us for a long time.”

Author’s take:

While Robert Lewandowski would be a brilliant addition for Real Madrid, a better choice would be either Mauro Icardi or Harry Kane. The Polish international is a class act but also happens to be 29 years old, which means that Real Madrid would only get maybe four odd seasons of brilliant performances from the Pole and the Los Blancos need someone who can prolifically lead their line into the future.
