Barcelona Legend Worried About A Possible Repeat Of 2012 against Chelsea

Barcelona legend Carles Puyol fears that The Blues could dump the Catalonian’s out of the Champions League once again like they did back in 2012.

If there’s one lesson that Puyol would like to pass down to this Barcelona team for tonight’s fixture would be to never underestimate the Premier League champions. The scores are currently locked at 1-1, as the game at Stamford Bridge finished with Barcelona notching up a crucial advantage in the tie with an away goal through Lionel Messi after Willian put the hosts in front.

And despite winning the Champions League three times in his illustrious career, Puyol might still have nightmares of the two-legged tie six years ago. Puyol was captaining Barcelona as they trailed 1-0 in the on aggregate heading into the Camp Nou after Didier Drogba won the first leg for Chelsea. However, the defending champions of the trophy came back stronger in the second leg and were 2-0 up with goals from Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta as they put Barcelona in cruise mode, to make matters worse for the visitor’s John Terry was sent off.

But an away goal through Ramires swung the tie back towards the English side as Chelsea would go through on an away goal. And in the end, a resilient, 10 men Chelsea team caught Barcelona on the counter in the dying minutes of the game when Fernando Torres ensured the progress through to the final 3-2 on aggregate and 2-2 on the night. Chelsea went on to beat Bayern Munich in the final to lift their first ever Champions League trophy

Chelsea May Play A Similar Game- Puyol

The 39-year-old former Spain defender has warned Barcelona to be at their best throughout their game, “After the first leg I think Barcelona are the favorites but you can’t be sure. They (Chelsea) can hurt you a lot on the counter-attack so Barcelona will have to put in a serious performance and try to score a goal because if they don’t Chelsea could hurt them on the counter.”

Puyol also believes Chelsea will stick to the way they knocked out Barcelona the last time, “Now I think Chelsea will play a similar game: very strong in defense and look for counter-attacks. For Barcelona, the advantage they have is that with the 1-1 draw they will go through with a 0-0”

“The difference is that we lost 1-0 in London so we had to win, we went out to attack and were 2-0 up, and after that they made it 2-1. We did all we could to score another goal but Fernando scored the second on the counter-attack and eliminated us.” Puyol explained during the time he faced Chelsea in 2012

Author’s Take-

I have to agree with Puyol here, Chelsea can never be underestimated especially after the performance they put in at the Camp Nou in 2012. But Barceloisare still in the lead with an away goal and should not throw it away this time. Their record at home is extremely good and Chelsea needs to be very cautious in their approach. They are on top of the La Liga table and Chelsea are struggling to find any fluent form, so I believe Barcelona should go through to the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament.
