Fantasy Premier League – Gameweek 26 – Top 3 Captain Picks

As we move into the second Gameweek of the week, it’s time to look at our captain choices again. With the usual suspects facing tricky ties, it’s bound to be a hard choice.

1. Sergio Aguero (vs BUR A)

It’s almost as if we’re back in 2014. Sergio Aguero, fit and firing, as the first choice, notching up goals just about every week. With more than just a few reminders of his prowess, it’s hard to look past the man. Man City have risen back strongly from a few setbacks, and are now back at their fearsome best. With Gabriel Jesus ruled out for the best part of February as well, Aguero will again be the unequivocal leader of this hunting pack. And he’s done pretty well there so far – with 8 goals and 1 assists in 6 starts in January.

He’ll be up against Burnley, an opponent he knows all to well about. Indeed, Aguero has 6 goals in his 5 meetings against the Clarets, including a goal in the reverse fixture back in October. And they were in much better form back then than they are now. Surprise packages of the early season, Burnley are now winless in 9 and have only kept 1 clean sheet in their last 8 games. And it was to be expected as well – with 15.9 shots per game conceded, Burnley concede the most shots in the league. Even at Turf Moor, 13.8 per game is the league highest.

With the best form/fixture combination for the week, Aguero’s as safe as houses.

2. Mohamed Salah (vs TOT H)

Often, we look for combinations of form and fixture as our captains. However, if anyone has put in a case for ignoring fixture, and going with form completely, it’s Mo Salah. His absolutely unstoppable form just never ceases to amaze, with his explosive consistency over such a prolonged period of time struggling to find any matches over FPL history. He now has 131 points in his last 14 games, as his form reaches ridiculous proportions. Warming up with a goal against Huddersfield in mid-week, the regaining of penalty duties is another string in his bow.

Salah’s consistency never ceases to amaze

Although Spurs might be a tricky challenge, again, if there’s anyone up for tricky challenges, it’s Salah. 2 goals, 2 assists against Arsenal. 1 goal, 1 assist against Man City. 1 goal each against Spurs and Chelsea. The man for the big moment, he averages 7.14 points per game against teams in the top 6. Stretch that to the top 8 sides, his points per game rises to 8.1. And it’s not as if Spurs don’t have their defensive frailties too – they’ve been exposed in big games by Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

There’s even a case for just leaving the armband on Salah all season – how simple would that make our game.

3. Callum Wilson (vs STK H) – Differential Punt

For the differential punt, here’s a man not many thought would be in the reckoning, if you’d have asked few weeks ago – Callum Wilson. Back from back-t0-back anterior cruciate ligament injuries, the Bournemouth speedster has bounced back exceedingly well. A goal and an assist in midweek at Stamford Bridge, he now has 3 goals and 2 assists in his last 4 games, underlining is form. It seems that he has also benefited from his place in the side being all the more secure – with main striker Jermain Defoe sidelined.

His form has coincided with Bournemouth’s upsurge. The Cherries now have scored 13 goals in their last 5 games, and are unbeaten in the same period. Up against Stoke – the worst defense and bottom side, they’ll fancy their chances.
