Real Madrid create four-man shortlist to replace star Karim Benzema

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and President Florentino Perez have created a four-man short-list to replace Karim Benzema and it includes a few surprises.

With Frenchman Karim Benzema misfiring, with just two goals in the La Liga this season and Gareth Bale suffering from multiple injuries, Los Blancos have suffered for goals. However, it looks like both Zidane and Florentino Perez has created a shortlist to replace the Frenchman and the four-man list includes a few superstars.

Is this the end of his career at the Santiago Bernabeu??

According to a report from Marca; Tottenham star Harry Kane, Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi, RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner and Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez all make the shortlist. All four players fit the conditions that the club are looking for which Marca adds as “adds presence and threat in the penalty area”.

However, while Icardi has always been on the top European club’s shortlists especially with his performances week in and out, Leipzig’s Timo Werner has recently been added. The German international has been in sensational form for both club and country, with 8 goals in just 15 appearances this season and 21 goals in 31 games for Leipzig last season, has made him one of the world’s most coveted youngsters.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane who finished 2017 as the world’s top scorer with 56 goals is another top target and would come with an enormous price-tag alongside Icardi. However, while the Argentine striker has a release clause worth €100 million, the England international has no such clause but would still be worth the same. The cheapest alternative, however, would be Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez who will be available as a free agent at the end of the season, if he doesn’t move to Manchester City before that.

The Chilean has been linked with a move away from the Emirates since February of 2017 after he refused to sign a contract extension with the Emirates stadium side. Worth only €40 million as of right now, he would be the perfect addition especially since he’s already proved himself in the La Liga with rivals Barcelona.

Author’s take:

Karim Benzema was once one of the world’s best strikers but now it looks like the Frenchman is nearing the end of his prime. Not to mention, Real Madrid needs a world class striker who can score day in and day out, which is exactly what all four targets will do for them. However, in the end, what makes a difference is how much Los Blancos are willing to spend on their future.
